ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهِ إِلَيْكَ ۖ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيْهِمْ إِذْ أَجْمَعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَمْكُرُونَ

That is of the tidings of the unseen, which We reveal to thee. And thou wast not with them when they agreed upon their plan while they were plotting.

[c]That is of the tidings of the unseen, which We reveal to thee. And thou wast not with them when they agreed upon their plan while they were plotting.[1602]

Commentary:

Having finished the life story of Joseph, the Surah beautifully turns to the people of Mecca, who were like brethren unto the Holy Prophet.

This verse thus makes it clear that this account of Joseph was not a mere story. It embodied mighty prophecies relating to the future of the Holy Prophet and of Islam, for, as pointed out in the course of comments on this chapter, many important events in the life of Joseph had their counterparts in the life of the Holy Prophet.

The word "they" in the clause, while they were plotting, refers not to the brothers of Joseph, but to the people of the Holy Prophet, who is told that what he had been listening to was "of the tidings of the unseen" embodying mighty prophecies over which no human being could have any control. These prophecies must, therefore, be regarded as emanating from God Who is the Knower of all secrets.

English - Short Commentary Translation

[a]That is of the tidings of the unseen,[1414] which We reveal to thee. And thou wast not with them when they[1415] agreed upon their plan while they were plotting.

The verse means that this account of Joseph was not a mere story. It embodied mighty prophecies relating to the future of the Holy Prophet and Islam.

The pronoun 'they' refers to the enemies of the Holy Prophet.

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

یہ غیب کی خبروں میں سے ہے جسے ہم تیری طرف وحی کرتے ہیں اور تُو ان کے پاس نہیں تھا جب انہوں نے اپنی بات پر اتفاق کر لیا تھا جبکہ وہ (بُرے) منصوبے بنا رہے تھے۔

Cela fait partie des nouvelles de l’invisible que Nous te révélons. Et tu n’étais pas présent parmi eux lorsqu’ils se mirent d’accord sur leur plan pendant qu’ils tramaient un complot.

Dies ist Kunde von dem Verborgenen, das Wir dir offenbaren*. Du warst nicht bei ihnen, als sie sich über ihren Plan einigten, indes sie Ränke schmiedeten.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

(اے ہمارے رسول)! یہ (بیان[1]) غیب کی خبروں میں سے ہے ہم اسے تجھ پر وحی (کے ذریعہ سے ظاہر) کرتے ہیں اور جب انہوں نے (یعنی تیرے دشمنوں نے تیرے خلاف) تدبیریں کرتے ہوئے آخر آپس میں اتفاق کر لیا تو تو (اس وقت) ان کے پاس (موجود) نہیں تھا۔

یعنی یہ قصہ نہیں پیشگوئی ہے۔ تجھ سے بھی ایسا ہی واقعہ پیش آنے والا ہے جیسا کہ ہوا۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

اے محمدؐ، یہ قصہ غیب کی خبروں میں سے ہے جو ہم تم پر وحی کر رہے ہیں ورنہ تم اُس وقت موجود نہ تھے جب یوسفؑ کے بھائیوں نے آپس میں اتفاق کر کے سازش کی تھی

English - Sahih

That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal, [O Muhammad], to you. And you were not with them when they put together their plan while they conspired.

اردو ترجمہ احمد علی

یہ غیب کی خبریں کہیں جو ہم تیرے ہاں بھیجتے ہیں اور تو ان کے پاس نہیں تھا جب کہ انہوں نے اپنا ارادہ پکا کر لیا اور وہ تدبیریں کر رہے تھے

That (is) from the news (of) the unseen which We reveal to you. And not you were with them when they put together their plan while they (were) plotting.
