13:6

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And if thou dost wonder, then wondrous indeed is their saying: ‘What! when we have become dust, shall we then be in a state of new creation?’ These it is who disbelieve in their Lord; and these it is who shall have shackles round their necks, and they shall be the inmates of the Fire, wherein they shall abide.

27:68; 37:17; 50:4.

36:9; 76:5.

English - Short Commentary Translation

[a]And if thou shouldst wonder at their saying, ‘What! when we have become dust, shall we then be in a state of new creation,’ then wondrous indeed is what they say. These it is who disbelieve in their Lord; and [b]these it is who shall have shackles[1423] round their necks, and they shall be the inmates of the Fire, wherein they shall abide.

27:68; 37:17; 50:4.

36:9; 76:5.

The shackles of false beliefs and evil practices.

English - Five Volume Translation

[a]And if thou dost wonder, then wondrous indeed is their saying: ‘What! when we have become dust, shall we then be in a state of new creation?’ These it is who disbelieve in their Lord; and [b]these it is who shall have shackles round their necks, and they shall be the inmates of the Fire, wherein they shall abide.[1617]

27:68; 37:17; 50:4.

36:9; 76:5.

Commentary:

This verse purports to say that it is no matter of wonder that God should have granted such miraculous success to the Holy Prophet and should have brought about moral and spiritual reformation through him. What really would be a subject for wonder would be that the world should become corrupt and God should take no steps to reform it or that disbelievers could not rise to a new life after having fallen spiritually. When the water of life comes, death must depart.

The words, these it is who shall have shackles round their necks, and they shall be the inmates of the Fire, contain a warning that those who despair of the grace of God must burn in the fire of regret and remorse and those who reject and abandon the ways of God in favour of their self-devised plans and schemes, which are like so many shackles round their necks, must come to grief. It is a pity, however, that instead of turning their attention to the propagation of Islam and prayer and spiritual regeneration, present-day Muslims insist on legalizing interest and insurance policies, etc.

English - Sahih

And if you are astonished, [O Muhammad] - then astonishing is their saying, "When we are dust, will we indeed be [brought] into a new creation?" Those are the ones who have disbelieved in their Lord, and those will have shackles upon their necks, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.

English - Talal Itani

And if you (are) astonished, then astonishing (is) their saying, "When we are dust, will we (be) indeed, in a creation new?" Those (are) the ones who disbelieved in their Lord, and those the iron chains (will be) in their necks, those (are the) companions (of) the Fire, they in it (will) abide forever.

English - Arberry

If thou wouldst wonder, surely wonderful is their saying, 'What, when we are dust shall we indeed then be raised up again in new creation?' Those are they that disbelieve in their Lord; those -- on their necks are fetters; those shall be the inhabitants of the Fire, therein dwelling forever.

English - Maududi

And were you to wonder, then wondrous indeed is the saying of those who say: "What! After we have been reduced to dust, shall we be created afresh?" They are the ones who disbelieved in their Lord; they are the ones who shall have shackles around their necks. They shall be the inmates of the Fire, wherein they will abide for ever.

English - Ahmed Ali

If you are surprised, then astonishing is the speech (of those who say:) "Having turned to dust shall we be raised as a new creation?" They are the ones who deny their Lord, and they will have collars around their necks. They are the inmates of Hell, where they will abide for ever.

English - Yusuf Ali

If thou dost marvel (at their want of faith), strange is their saying: "When we are (actually) dust, shall we indeed then be in a creation renewed?" They are those who deny their Lord! They are those round whose necks will be yokes (of servitude): they will be Companions of the Fire, to dwell therein (for aye)!

The shackles of false beliefs and evil practices.

English - Pickthall

And if thou wonderest, then wondrous is their saying: When we are dust, are we then forsooth (to be raised) in a new creation? Such are they who disbelieve in their Lord; such have carcans on their necks; such are rightful owners of the Fire, they will abide therein.

English - Muhammad Ali ^ra

And if thou wonderest, then wondrous is their saying: When we are dust, shall we then be raised in a new creation? These are they who disbelieve in their Lord, and these have chains on their necks, and they are the companions of the Fire; in it they will abide.

English - Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan ^ra

If thou dost wonder at their saying, wondrous indeed it is: What, when we become dust, shall we enter upon a new state of creation? These are they who disbelieve in their Lord, they shall have shackles round their necks, and they shall be the inmates of the Fire, wherein they shall abide.
