9:46

۞ وَلَوۡ اَرَادُوا الۡخُرُوۡجَ لَاَعَدُّوۡا لَہٗ عُدَّۃً وَّلٰکِنۡ کَرِہَ اللّٰہُ انۡۢبِعَاثَہُمۡ فَثَبَّطَہُمۡ وَقِیۡلَ اقۡعُدُوۡا مَعَ الۡقٰعِدِیۡنَ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And if they had intended to go forth they would certainly have made some preparation for it; but Allah was averse to their marching forth. So He kept them back, and it was said: ‘Sit ye at home with those who sit.’

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور اگر ان کا (جہاد پر) نکلنے کا ارادہ ہوتا تو وہ ضرور اس کی تیاری بھی کرتے لیکن اللہ نے پسند ہی نہیں کیا کہ وہ (اس اعلیٰ مقصد کے لئے) اٹھ کھڑے ہوں اور اس نے انہیں (وہیں) پڑا رہنے دیا اور (انہیں) کہا گیا بیٹھے رہو بیٹھ رہنے والوں کے ساتھ۔

French

Et s’ils avaient vraiment voulu partir au combat, ils auraient assurément fait des préparatifs pour cela ; mais leur départ pour ce grand objectif –là aurait déplu à Allāh. Il les a donc retenus en arrière et il leur a été dit : « Restez assis chez vous avec ceux qui restent assis. »

Wären sie aber zum Ausmarsch entschlossen gewesen, sie hätten doch gewiss für ihn gerüstet; doch Allah war ihrem Ausziehen abgeneigt. So hielt Er sie zurück, und es ward gesagt: "Sitzet (daheim) mit den Sitzenden."

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور اگر وہ (جنگ کے لئے) نکلنے کا پختہ ارادہ رکھتے تو اس کے لئے کوئی تیاری بھی کرتے۔ لیکن اللہ نے ان کے (جنگ کے لئے) نکلنے کو پسند نہیں کیا۔ پس ان کو اپنی جگہ پر ہی بٹھا دیا اور ان سے یہ کہہ دیا گیا (یعنی ان کے کافر دوستوں نے کہا) کہ جو لوگ بیٹھ رہے ہیں انہی کے ساتھ تم بھی بیٹھ رہو۔

English - Short Commentary Translation

And if they had really intended to go forth, they would have made some preparation for it; but Allah was averse to their marching forth. So He kept them back, and it was said to them: ‘keep sitting at home with those who have kept sitting.’

English - Five Volume Translation

And if they had intended to go forth, they would certainly have made some preparation for it; but Allah was averse to their marching forth. So He kept them back, and it was said: ‘Sit ye at home with those who sit.’[1203]

Important Words:

ثبطھم (He kept them back) is derived from ثبط (thabita), i.e. he was or became stupid or weak in his action; or he became heavy, sluggish or slow. ثبطه عن الامر(thabbata-hu) means, he hindered or withheld him from doing the affair; or he diverted him from it by occupying him otherwise; or he prevented him from doing it by making him cowardly and weak-hearted; or he intervened as an obstacle between him and the affair (Lane).

Commentary:

The verse exposes the hollowness of the excuse offered by the hypocrites. It purports to say that if the hypocrites had been really anxious to march out but had only been prevented from doing so by unforeseen obstacles over which they had no control and which had cropped up at the last moment, they should have made preparations for the expedition long before by providing themselves with arms and provision. But they did nothing of the sort. Thus the fact that they made no preparation and came with their excuses at the eleventh hour shows that from the very beginning they had no intention or desire to go and that the excuses they brought forward were only so many covers to veil their hypocrisy.

اگر واقعی ان کا ارادہ نکلنے کا ہوتا تو وہ اس کے لیے کچھ تیاری کرتے لیکن اللہ کو ان کا اٹھنا پسندہی نہ تھا، اس لیے اس نے انہیں سست کر دیا اور کہہ دیا کہ بیٹھ رہو بیٹھنے والوں کے ساتھ

English - Sahih

And if they had intended to go forth, they would have prepared for it [some] preparation. But Allah disliked their being sent, so He kept them back, and they were told, "Remain [behind] with those who remain."

اور اگر وہ نکلنا چاہتے تو اس کے لیے کوئی سامان ضرور تیار کرتے لیکن الله نے ان کا اٹھنا پسند نہ کیا سو انہیں روک دیا اور حکم ہوا کہ بیٹھنے والوں کے ساتھ بیٹھے رہو
