He said, ‘This is of Satan’s doing; he is indeed an enemy, a manifest misleader.’

اور وہ شہر میں اس کے رہنے والوں کی غفلت کی حالت میں (ان سے چھپتا ہوا) داخل ہوا تو وہاں اس نے دو مَردوں کو دیکھا جو ایک دوسرے سے لڑ رہے تھے۔ یہ (ایک) اس کے قبیلے کا تھا اور وہ (دوسرا) اس کے دشمن قبیلے کا۔ پس وہ جو اس کے قبیلے کا تھا اس نے اس کو مخالف قبیلے والے کے خلاف مدد کے لئے آواز دی۔ پس موسیٰ نے اسے مُکّا مارا اور اس کا کام تمام کر دیا۔ اس نے (دل میں) کہا کہ یہ (جو کچھ ہوا) یہ تو شیطان کا کام تھا۔ یقیناً وہ کھلا کھلا گمراہ کرنے والا دشمن ہے۔

Et il entra dans la ville discrètement alors que ses habitants ne lui portaient pas attention ; et il y trouva deux hommes en train de se battre– l’un de son propre peuple, et l’autre, de ses ennemis. Et celui qui était de son peuple l’appela à l’aide contre celui qui était de ses ennemis. Alors Moïse le frappa du poing ; et causa ainsi sa mort. Puis Moïse dit : « Ceci est l’œuvre de Satan, il est vraiment un ennemi, un trompeur manifeste. »

German

Und er betrat die Stadt um eine Zeit, da ihre Bewohner in einem Zustand von Unachtsamkeit waren; und er fand da zwei Männer, die miteinander kämpften, der eine von seiner eigenen Partei und der andere von seinen Feinden. Jener, der von seiner Partei war, rief ihn zu Hilfe gegen den, der von seinen Feinden war. So schlug Moses ihn zurück; doch es führte zu seinem Tod. Er sprach: "Das ist ein Werk Satans; er ist ein Feind, ein offenbarer Verführer."

Ed egli entrò in città, in un tempo in cui i suoi abitanti si trovavano in una condizione di disattenzione; e vi trovò due uomini che stavano litigando - uno del suo gruppo e l'altro di quello dei suoi nemici. E quello che era del suo gruppo chiese il suo aiuto contro quello che era del gruppo nemico. Così Mosè colpì quest'ultimo con un pugno, causandone la morte. Allora Mosè disse: «Questa è opera di Satana, che è un vero nemico, un ingannatore manifesto.»

Entró en la ciudad cuando la gente aún dormía; encontrando allí a dos hombres que peleaban: uno de su propio pueblo y otro de sus enemigos. El miembro de su propio pueblo le pidió ayuda contra el que pertenecía a sus enemigos. Moisés le golpeó entonces con su puño, causándole así la muerte. Dijo: “Esto es obra de Satanás; él es en verdad un enemigo, un engañador manifiesto”.

اور (ایک دن) وہ شہر میں ایسے وقت میں آیا کہ لوگ غفلت کی حالت[3] میں تھے اس نے شہر میں دو آدمیوں کو دیکھا کہ آپس میں لڑ رہے تھے۔ ایک اس کی قوم سے (تعلق رکھتا) تھا اور ایک اس کے دشمنوں سے۔ پس اس نے جو اس کی جماعت میں سے تھا اس شخص کے خلاف جو اس کے دشمنوں میں سے تھا اس کی مدد طلب کی۔ اس پر موسیٰ نے اس (دشمن) کو ایک گھونسا[4] مارا اور اس (گھونسے) نے اس کا کام تمام کر دیا۔ پھر موسیٰ نے کہا یہ سب واقعہ شیطانی کرتوت[5] سے ہوا ہے۔ وہ (شیطان) (مومن کا) دشمن اور (اسے امن کے راستہ سے) کھلا کھلا بہکانے والا ہے۔

(ایک روز) وہ شہر میں ایسے وقت میں داخل ہوا جبکہ اہلِ شہر غفلت میں تھے وہاں اس نے دیکھا کہ دو آدمی لڑ رہے ہیں ایک اس کی اپنی قوم کا تھا اور دُوسرا اس کی دشمن قوم سے تعلق رکھتا تھا اس کی قوم کے آدمی نے دشمن قوم والے کے خلاف اسے مدد کے لیے پکارا موسیٰؑ نے اس کو ایک گھونسا مارا اور اس کا کام تمام کر دیا (یہ حرکت سرزد ہوتے ہی) موسیٰؑ نے کہا "یہ شیطان کی کارفرمائی ہے، وہ سخت دشمن اور کھلا گمراہ کن ہے"

English - Sahih

And he entered the city at a time of inattention by its people and found therein two men fighting: one from his faction and one from among his enemy. And the one from his faction called for help to him against the one from his enemy, so Moses struck him and [unintentionally] killed him. [Moses] said, "This is from the work of Satan. Indeed, he is a manifest, misleading enemy."

وکزہ (struck him with his fist) means, he struck or beat him; he beat or struck him with his fist; he pushed or impelled or repelled him; he goaded him (Lane).

Commentary:

Being of a very noble nature and having been inspired by high ideals, Moses was always ready to help weak and oppressed people and so when a poor and weak Israelite sought his help against an arrogant and cruel Egyptian, he at once went to his rescue.

The expression, "this is of Satan’s doing," according to Arabic idiom means that some evil thing has happened, i.e. "Satan had caused an Egyptian and an Israelite to fight and I had to come to the assistance of the oppressed Israelite which resulted in an evil thing i.e. the death of a person." Or the words might have been addressed to the dead Egyptian meaning, "this is the outcome of your satanic deed," i.e. "your death is the result of your own wickedness and transgression." The fact that Moses used no lethal weapon and only repelled the Egyptian or at best struck him with his fist shows that the latter’s death was accidental. Clearly there was no intention on Moses’ part to cause it.

The Quran has not mentioned the wicked deed of the Egyptian to which Moses refers in this verse but from Jewish Encyclopedia we know that the said Egyptian had forced an Israelite woman to commit adultery with him and that was indeed a devilish deed. It apparently led to the quarrel referred to in the verse and ultimately to Moses’ interference and the death of the Egyptian (Jew. Enc. under "Moses").
