لَمْ يَكُنِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ مُنفَكِّينَ حَتَّىٰ تَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلْبَيِّنَةُ

Those who disbelieve from among the People of the Book and the idolaters would not desist from disbelief until there came to them the clear evidence —

Important Words:

منفکین is derived from انفک. They say انفک الشیء عن الشیء i.e. the thing became separated from another thing. ما انفک یفعل کذاmeans, he continued to do so or did not cease to do so or did not desist from doing so (Lane & Aqrab).

Commentary:

The Quran has divided all disbelievers into two categories—the People of the Book and the idolaters, i.e. those who do not believe in any revealed Scripture. The verse purports to say that before the advent of the Holy Prophet those who had received revealed guidance as well as those who were complete strangers to it were all sunk in immorality and iniquity and had held false beliefs and wrong ideals and principles, and that if the Holy Prophet had not come and the Quran had not been revealed, they would have continued to flounder in darkness. It is to this universal moral decline that the Quran has referred in the words ظھر الفساد فی البر والبحر i.e. corruption had appeared on land and on sea (30:42).

Those, who disbelieve from among the People of the Book and the idolaters,[3399] would not desist from disbelief until there should come to them the clear evidence—

The Qur’an has divided all disbelievers into two categories—the People of the Book and the idolaters (those who do not believe in any revealed Scripture).

وہ لوگ جنہوں نے اہل کتاب اور مشرکین میں سے کفر کیا، ہرگز باز آنے والے نہ تھے باوجود اس کے کہ اُن کے پاس کھلی کھلی دلیل آ چکی تھی۔

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

وہ لوگ جنہوں نے کفر کیا ہے یعنی اہل کتاب[2] اور مشرک (دونوں ہی) کبھی (اپنے کفر سے) باز رہنے والے نہ تھے‘ جب تک کہ ان کے پاس واضح [3]دلیل نہ آجاتی۔

اس آیت میں صاف طور پر اہلِ کتاب کا نام بھی کافر رکھا ہے۔

مطلب یہ کہ اہلِ کتاب چونکہ غلط یا صحیح طور پر ایک آسمانی صحیفہ سے وابستہ ہیں اس لئے جب تک محمد رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم قرآن لے کر نہ آتے ان کی اصلاح کا کوئی امکان نہ تھا۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

اہل کتاب اور مشرکین میں سے جو لوگ کافر تھے (وہ اپنے کفر سے) باز آنے والے نہ تھے جب تک کہ ان کے پاس دلیل روشن نہ آ جائے

English - Sahih

Those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists were not to be parted [from misbelief] until there came to them clear evidence -

اہلِ کتاب میں سے کافر اور مشرک لوگ باز آنے والے نہیں تھے یہاں تک کہ ان کے پاس کھلی دلیل آئے
