There is a good model for you in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, ‘We have nothing to do with you and with that which you worship beside Allah. We disbelieve all that you believe. There has arisen enmity and hatred between us and you for ever, until you believe in Allah alone’ — with the exception of this saying of Abraham to his father, ‘I will surely ask forgiveness for thee, though I have no power to prevail upon Allah in favour of thee.’ They prayed to God saying, ‘Our Lord, in Thee do we put our trust and to Thee do we turn repentant, and towards Thee is the final return.

یقیناً تمہارے لئے ابراہیم اور ان لوگوں میں جو اُس کے ساتھ تھے ایک اُسوہء حسنہ ہے۔ جب انہوں نے اپنی قوم سے کہا کہ ہم تم سے بیزار ہیں اور اُس سے بھی جس کی تم اللہ کے سوا عبادت کرتے ہو۔ ہم تمہارا انکار کرتے ہیں اور ہمارے اور تمہارے درمیان ہمیشہ کی دشمنی اور بغض ظاہر ہوچکے ہیں یہاں تک کہ تم ایک ہی اللہ پر ایمان لے آؤ۔ سوائے اپنے باپ کے لیے ابراہیم کے ایک قول کے (جو ایک استثناءتھا) کہ میں ضرور تیرے لئے بخشش کی دعا مانگوں گا حالانکہ میں اللہ کی طرف سے تیرے بارہ میں کچھ بھی اختیار نہیں رکھتا۔ اے ہمارے ربّ! تجھ پر ہی ہم توکّل کرتے ہیں اور تیری طرف ہی ہم جھکتے ہیں اور تیری طرف ہی لوٹ کر جانا ہے۔

French

Il y a pour vous un excellent modèle en Abraham et ceux qui étaient avec lui, lorsqu’ils dirent à leur peuple : « Nous n’avons rien à faire avec vous, ni avec ce que vous adorez en dehors d’Allāh. Nous vous renions. L'inimitié et la haine sont devenues manifestes entre nous et vous pour toujours, jusqu’à ce que vous croyiez en Allāh Seul » – sauf qu’Abraham dit à son père : « Je demanderai assurément pardon pour toi, quoique je n’aie aucun pouvoir de prévaloir en ta faveur auprès d’Allāh. » « Notre Seigneur, c’est en Toi que nous plaçons notre confiance, et c’est vers Toi que nous nous tournons repentants, et vers Toi qu’est la destination finale.

Noi non crediamo in niente di quello in cui credete voi. تم لوگوں کے لیے ابراہیمؑ اور اُس کے ساتھیوں میں ایک اچھا نمونہ ہے کہ اُنہوں نے اپنی قوم سے صاف کہہ دیا "ہم تم سے اور تمہارے اِن معبودوں سے جن کو تم خدا کو چھوڑ کر پوجتے ہو قطعی بیزار ہیں، ہم نے تم سے کفر کیا اور ہمارے اور تمہارے درمیان ہمیشہ کے لیے عداوت ہو گئی اور بیر پڑ گیا جب تک تم اللہ واحد پر ایمان نہ لاؤ" مگر ابراہیمؑ کا اپنے باپ سے یہ کہنا (اِس سے مستثنیٰ ہے) کہ "میں آپ کے لیے مغفرت کی درخواست ضرور کروں گا، اور اللہ سے آپ کے لیے کچھ حاصل کر لینا میرے بس میں نہیں ہے" (اور ابراہیمؑ و اصحاب ابراہیمؑ کی دعا یہ تھی کہ) "اے ہمارے رب، تیرے ہی اوپر ہم نے بھروسا کیا اور تیری ہی طرف ہم نے رجوع کر لیا اور تیرے ہی حضور ہمیں پلٹنا ہے

There has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, "Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah. We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone" except for the saying of Abraham to his father, "I will surely ask forgiveness for you, but I have not [power to do] for you anything against Allah. Our Lord, upon You we have relied, and to You we have returned, and to You is the destination.

قرآن کریم میں دوسری جگہ آتا ہے کہ منافقوں کے لئے بھی استغفار نہ کرو۔ یہ اس کے اُلٹ نہیں۔ کیونکہ اس آیت سے صرف یہ نکلتا ہے کہ ابراہیمؑ کے چچا جن کا یہاں ذکر ہے منافق نہ تھے۔ بلکہ مذہب کے بارہ میں فریب خوردہ تھے۔ پس چونکہ نیک نیتی سے شرک کرتے تھے ان کے لئے استغفار جائز تھا۔ لیکن سورۃ توبہ کی آیت۱۱۴ سے پتہ لگتا ہے کہ ایک وقت ایسا آیا کہ حضرت ابراہیم علیہ السلام کو پتہ لگ گیا کہ ان کا چچا دُبدھا میں نہیں بلکہ سچے مذہب کا واقعی دشمن ہے تب انہوں نے اس سے براءت ظاہر کردی۔

You have had a good example in Abraham, and those with him, when they said to their people, 'We are quit of you and that you serve, apart from God. We disbelieve in you, and between us and you enmity has shown itself, and hatred for ever, until you believe in God alone. Commentary:

Abraham, as elsewhere stated in the Quran (11:76), was a model of forbearance and tender-heartedness. His example has been mentioned here to emphasize the fact that whenever it becomes clear that a certain person or people are inimically disposed towards Truth and are bent upon extirpating it, all friendly relations with them are to be given up. The verse also implies that when God has brought into being a better brotherhood—the Brotherhood of Faith—than blood relationships, then why should Muslims be anxious to have friendly relations with those who are the enemies of God and His Prophet?

The expression کفرنا بکم which is generally translated as, "we disbelieve all that you believe" may also mean, "we have nothing to do with you;" the words کفر بکذا meaning, he declared himself to be clear or quit of such a thing (Lane).

Abraham’s example has been mentioned here to emphasize that whenever it becomes clear that a certain person or persons are inimically disposed towards truth and are bent upon extirpating it, all friendly relations with them are to be given up. The expression, Kafarna Bikum, which is generally translated as 'we disbelieve all that you believe in' may also mean, We have nothing to do with you; the expression, Kafara Bikadha, meaning, he declared himself to be clear or quit of such a thing (Lane).
