يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱجْتَنِبُوا۟ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ ٱلظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ ۖ وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا۟ وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا ۚ أَيُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَن يَأْكُلَ لَحْمَ أَخِيهِ مَيْتًا فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ ۚ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ تَوَّابٌ رَّحِيمٌ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

O ye who believe! avoid most of suspicions; for suspicion in some cases is a sin. And spy not, nor back-bite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his brother who is dead? Certainly you would loathe it. And fear Allah, surely, Allah is Oft-Returning with compassion and is Merciful.

O ye who believe! avoid much suspicion[a]; for suspicion in some cases is a sin. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his brother who is dead? Certainly you would loathe it. And fear Allah, surely, Allah is Oft-Returning with compassion and is Merciful.[3850]

Commentary:

As stated above the principal theme of the Surah is the establishment of concord, amity and goodwill between Muslim individuals and groups and therefore it has mentioned some of those social evils which cause discord, dissensions and differences, and corrode, corrupt and contaminate a society, eating into its vitals, and enjoins Muslims to be on their guard against them. Ridiculing and taunting others, spying, and calling by nick-names, and suspicion and backbiting are some of these social evils. Women have been particularly mentioned here in that they are more prone to fall a victim to these evils. The main cause, which lies at the root of these evils, is conceit and a false sense of superiority, which the next verse expressly deals with. By removing the basic causes of disharmony and disagreement among Muslims the Surah has laid the foundation of a firm and solid brotherhood of Islam.

English - Short Commentary Translation

O ye who believe! avoid much suspicion;[2795] [b]for suspicion in some cases is a sin. And spy not on one another, neither backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Certainly, you would loathe it. And fear Allah, surely, Allah is Oft-Returning with compassion and is Merciful.

The principal theme of the Surah being the establishment of concord, amity and goodwill among Muslim individuals and groups, this and the preceding verse mention some of those social evils which cause discord, dissensions and differences; and corrode, corrupt and contaminate a society and eat into its vitals; and enjoins Muslims to be on their guard against them. اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اے لوگو جو ایمان لائے ہو! ظن سے بکثرت اجتناب کیا کرو۔ یقیناً بعض ظن گناہ ہوتے ہیں۔ اور تجسس نہ کیا کرو۔ اور تم میں سے کوئی کسی دوسرے کی غیبت نہ کرے۔ کیا تم میں سے کوئی یہ پسند کرتا ہے کہ اپنے مردہ بھائی کا گوشت کھائے؟ پس تم اس سے سخت کراہت کرتے ہو۔ اور اللہ کا تقویٰ اختیار کرو۔ یقیناً اللہ بہت توبہ قبول کرنے والا (اور) بار بار رحم کرنے والا ہے ۔

French

Ô vous qui croyez ! Evitez de vous adonner à trop de soupçons ; car dans certains cas le soupçon est réellement un péché. Et n’espionnez pas, et ne médisez pas non plus les uns des autres. L’un de vous aimerait-il manger la chair de son frère mort ? ! Certainement, vous en auriez horreur. Et craignez Allāh. Assurément, Allāh revient sans cesse avec compassion et est Miséricordieux.

German

O die ihr glaubt! vermeidet häufigen Argwohn, denn mancher Argwohn ist Sünde. Und belauert nicht und führt nicht üble Nachrede übereinander. Würde wohl einer von euch gerne das Fleisch seines toten Bruders essen? Sicherlich würdet ihr es verabscheuen. So fürchtet Allah. Wahrlich, Allah ist langmütig, barmherzig.

Chinese

信仰的人们啊! 要避免许多猜疑。[1279] [a]有些猜疑是罪恶。不要互相窥探, 也不要在背后互相诽谤。难道你们有人喜欢吃他已故兄弟的肉? 你们必是厌恶这种行为的。要敬畏安拉, 安拉确是最接纳悔过的, 永久仁慈的。

53:29.

这章经文的要点是穆斯林个人间、团体中建立和平友好、睦邻关系和亲善, 这节经文和上一节经文提到了引起倾轧、纠纷和分歧的社会弊病; 这些社会弊病腐蚀、败坏社会并摧毁社会的核心; 穆斯林有责任防止它们。其中有的是取笑和嘲弄他人, 暗中监视人、呼外号、猜疑、暗中诽谤。在这里特别提到了妇女, 因为她们更容易成为这些弊病的牺牲品。这些弊病的主要根源是骄傲和虚伪的优越感, 这在下一章中明确论及。由于这一章奠定了伊斯兰教坚实有力的兄弟关系的基础, 遂而消除了穆斯林间的不睦与不和。

O voi che credete! Evitate di nutrire sospetti troppo frequentemente, perché alcuni sospetti sono certamente peccato. E non spiatevi a vicenda, né sparlate gli uni degli altri. A chi tra voi piacerebbe mangiare la carne del proprio fratello morto? Per certo, la aborrireste. E temete Allah. Senz'altro, Allah è Colui che spesso ritorna con compassione ed è Misericordioso.

Spanish

¡Oh vosotros, los creyentes! Evitad al máximo caer en las sospechas; pues algunas sospechas son ciertamente un pecado. No espiéis ni murmuréis de los demás. ¿Le gustaría a alguno de vosotros comer la carne de su hermano difunto? Cierto que os repugnaría. Y temed a l-lah, pues en verdad Al-lah es el Remisorio con compasión, y es Misericordioso.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اے ایمان والو! بہت سے گمانوں سے بچتے رہا کرو‘ کیونکہ بعض گمان گناہ بن جاتے ہیں‘ اور تجسس سے کام نہ لیا کرو۔ اور تم میں سے بعض‘ بعض کی غیبت نہ کیا کریں۔ کیا تم میں سے کوئی اپنے مردہ بھائی کا گوشت کھانا پسند کرے گا (اگر تمہاری طرف یہ بات منسوب کی جائے تو) تم اس کو ناپسند[1] کرو گے اوراللہ کا تقویٰ اختیار کرو‘ اللہ بہت ہی توبہ قبول کرنے والا (اور) باربار رحم کرنے والا ہے۔

پھر غیبت کیوں کرتے ہو جو ایسی ہی بری شے ہے۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

اے لوگو جو ایمان لائے ہو، بہت گمان کرنے سے پرہیز کرو کہ بعض گمان گناہ ہوتے ہیں تجسس نہ کرو اور تم میں سے کوئی کسی کی غیبت نہ کرے کیا تمہارے اندر کوئی ایسا ہے جو اپنے مرے ہوئے بھائی کا گوشت کھانا پسند کرے گا؟ دیکھو، تم خود اس سے گھن کھاتے ہو اللہ سے ڈرو، اللہ بڑا توبہ قبول کرنے والا اور رحیم ہے

English - Sahih

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

اے ایمان والو بہت سی بدگمانیوں سے بچتے رہو کیوں کہ بعض گمان تو گناہ ہیں اور ٹٹول بھی نہ کیا کرو اور نہ کوئی کسی سے غیبت کیا کرے کیا تم میں سے کوئی پسند کرتا ہے کہ اپنے مردہ بھائی کا گوشت کھائے سواس کو توتم ناپسند کرتے ہو اور الله سے ڈرو بے شک الله بڑا توبہ قبول کرنے والا نہایت رحم والا ہے

O you who believe! Avoid much of the assumption. Indeed, some assumption (is) sin. And (do) not spy and (do) not backbite some of you (to) others. Would like one of you to eat (the) flesh (of) his brother, dead? Nay, you would hate it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah (is) Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.

پھر غیبت کیوں کرتے ہو جو ایسی ہی بری شے ہے۔

English - Arberry

O believers, eschew much suspicion; some suspicion is a sin. And do not spy, neither backbite one another; would any of you like to eat the flesh of his brother dead? You would abominate it. And fear you God; assuredly God turns, and He is All-compassionate.

English - Maududi

Believers, avoid being excessively suspicious, for some suspicion is a sin. Do not spy, nor backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would surely detest it. Have fear of Allah. Surely Allah is much prone to accept repentance, is Most Compassionate.

O you who believe, avoid most suspicions: Some suspicions are indeed sins. So do not pry into others' secrets and do not backbite. Would any of you like to eat a dead brother's flesh? You would surely be revolted by it Then fear God. He is certainly forgiving and kind.
