وَيَقُولُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَوْلَا نُزِّلَتْ سُورَةٌ ۖ فَإِذَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ مُّحْكَمَةٌ وَذُكِرَ فِيهَا ٱلْقِتَالُ ۙ رَأَيْتَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَيْكَ نَظَرَ ٱلْمَغْشِىِّ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۖ فَأَوْلَىٰ لَهُمْ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And those who believe say, ‘Why is not a Surah revealed?’ But when a decisive Surah is revealed and fighting is mentioned therein, thou seest those in whose hearts is a disease looking towards thee with the look of one who is fainting on account of approaching death. So ruin seize them!

English - Five Volume Translation

And those who believe say, ‘Why is not a Surah revealed?’ But when a decisive Surah is revealed and fighting is mentioned therein, thou seest those in whose hearts is a disease, looking towards thee with the look of one in a death-faint. So ruin seize them![3805]

Important Words:

أولٰی (ruin) is derived from ولی and means, nearer; more deserving; more competent; more fit. The expression أولٰی لک is used to give warning, and means mischief or trouble has approached near thee, so be on your guard. The expression also means, woe to thee; woe be thy lot (Aqrab).

Commentary:

The verse means to say that whereas true believers avidly wait for a verse to be revealed which should embody a Divine commandment directing them to fight in the way of Allah, "those in whose heart is a disease," shudder at the very idea of being invited to fight.

English - Short Commentary Translation

And those who believe say, ‘Why is not a Surah revealed?’ But when a decisive Surah is revealed and fighting is mentioned therein, thou seest those in whose hearts is a disease, looking towards thee like the look of one who is fainting on account of approaching death. So woe to them!

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور وہ لوگ جو ایمان لائے ہیں کہیں گے کہ کیوں نہ کوئی سورت اتاری گئی؟ پس جب کوئی محکم سورت اتاری جائے گی اور اس میں قتال کا ذکر کیا جائے گا تو وہ لوگ جن کے دلوں میں مرض ہے تُو انہیں دیکھے گا کہ وہ تیری طرف اس طرح دیکھتے ہیں جیسے وہ شخص دیکھتا ہے جس پر موت کی غشی طاری ہوگئی ہو۔ پس ہلاکت ہو اُن کے لئے۔

French

Et ceux qui croient disent : « Pourquoi une sourate n’est-elle pas révélée ? » Mais lorsqu’une sourate décisive est révélée, et que le combat y est mentionné, tu vois ceux dont le cœur est atteint d’une maladie te regarder avec le regard de celui qui s’évanouit à l'approche de la mort. Que la destruction les saisisse donc !

Und die da glauben, sprechen: "Warum wird keine Sura herabgesandt?" Doch wenn eine entscheidende Sura herabgesandt wird und es ist darin von Kampf die Rede, dann siehst du die, in deren Herzen Krankheit ist, dich anschauen mit dem Blicke eines, der ob des Todes von Ohnmacht befallen wird. Verderben denn auf sie!

那些信的人说: “为什么没有降示一章经文?” 但是当一个决定性的一章经文下降而且内中提及战争时, 你会看到那些心中有病的人看着你好像一个临死昏晕的人的模样。他们真不幸啊!

E coloro che credono dicono: «Perché non è stata rivelata una Surah?» Ma quando viene rivelata una Sura decisiva, in cui si parla della lotta, allora vedi coloro che hanno il cuore malato guardare a te con lo sguardo di chi sta per svenire per l'avvicinarsi della morte. Così, che la rovina li colga!

Los creyentes dicen: “¿Por qué no se revela un Surah?”. Mas cuando se revela un Surah decisivo, y en él se menciona la lucha, verás a los de corazón enfermo mirarte con la mirada de quien está aturdido ante la sombra de la muerte. ¡La ruina caerá sobre ellos!

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور مومن کہتے ہیں کہ کیوں (اس پر) کوئی ایسی [2]سورۃ نازل نہیں ہوئی (جس میں جنگ کا حکم ہو) پس جب کوئی ایسی پختہ (احکام والی) سورۃ نازل ہوتی ہے اور اس میں لڑائی کا ذکر ہوتا تو تو ان لوگوں کو جن کے دلوں میں بیماری ہے دیکھتا ہے کہ وہ تیری طرف ایسے آدمی کی طرح دیکھتے ہیں جس پر موت[3] کی غشی طاری ہو۔ پس ان کے لئے (خدا کی طرف سے) ہلاکت مقدر ہے۔

یعنی مومنوں کو عمل شریعت کا اس قدر شوق ہوتا ہے کہ وہ تو انتظار کرتے رہتے ہیں کہ خدا کا کوئی حکم نازل ہو اور ہم اس پر عمل کریں۔ مگر منافق کی حالت یہ ہوتی ہے کہ جب کوئی قربانی والا حکم نازل ہو تو اس پر موت اپنے آنے سے پہلے وارد ہو جاتی ہے۔

یعنی ایسی غشی جو موت کے قریب آتی ہے جس وقت آنکھیں بالکل پھٹی کی پھٹی رہ جاتی ہیں۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

جو لوگ ایمان لائے ہیں وہ کہہ رہے تھے کہ کوئی سورت کیوں نہیں نازل کی جاتی (جس میں جنگ کا حکم دیا جائے) مگر جب ایک محکم سورت نازل کر دی گئی جس میں جنگ کا ذکر تھا تو تم نے دیکھا کہ جن کے دلوں میں بیماری تھی وہ تمہاری طرف اس طرح دیکھ رہے ہیں جیسے کسی پر موت چھا گئی ہو افسوس اُن کے حال پر

Those who believe say, "Why has a surah not been sent down? But when a precise surah is revealed and fighting is mentioned therein, you see those in whose hearts is hypocrisy looking at you with a look of one overcome by death. And more appropriate for them [would have been]

اردو ترجمہ احمد علی

اور کہتے ہیں وہ لوگ جو ایمان لائے کوئی سورت کیوں نہیں نازل ہوئی سو جس وقت کوئی صاف (مضمون) کی سورت نازل ہوتی ہے اور اس میں جہاد کا بھی ذکر ہوتا ہے تو جن لوگو ں کے دلوں میں بیماری (نفاق) ہے آپ ان لوگو ں کو دیکھتے ہیں کہ وہ آپ کی طرف اس طرح دیکھتے ہیں جیسے کسی پر موت کی بیہوشی طاری ہو پس ایسے لوگوں کے لیے تباہی ہے

English - Talal Itani

And say those who believe, "Why not has been revealed a Surah?" But when is revealed a Surah precise and is mentioned in it the fighting, you see those who, in their hearts, (is) a disease looking at you - a look (of) one fainting from the death. But more appropriate for them

اردہ تفصیرِ صغیر نوٹس ^*

یعنی ایسی غشی جو موت کے قریب آتی ہے جس وقت آنکھیں بالکل پھٹی کی پھٹی رہ جاتی ہیں۔

Those who believe say, 'Why has a sura not been sent down?' Then, when a clear sura is sent down, and therein fighting is mentioned, thou seest those in whose hearts is sickness looking at thee as one who swoons of death; but better for them would be

The believers used to say: “Why is a surah (that would ordain fighting) not revealed?” But when a definitive surah was revealed wherein fighting was mentioned, you saw that those in whose hearts there was a sickness looked at you as though they were about to faint at the approach of death. Pity on them!

Those who believe say: "How is it no Surah was revealed?" But when a categorical Surah is revealed that mentions war, you should see those who are sceptical staring at you like a man in the swoon of death. Alas the woe for them!

Those who believe say, "Why is not a sura sent down (for us)?" But when a sura of basic or categorical meaning is revealed, and fighting is mentioned therein, thou wilt see those in whose hearts is a disease looking at thee with a look of one in swoon at the approach of death.
