قَالَ لَقَدْ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعْجَتِكَ إِلَىٰ نِعَاجِهِۦ ۖ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْخُلَطَآءِ لَيَبْغِى بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَقَلِيلٌ مَّا هُمْ ۗ وَظَنَّ دَاوُۥدُ أَنَّمَا فَتَنَّٰهُ فَٱسْتَغْفَرَ رَبَّهُۥ وَخَرَّ رَاكِعًا وَأَنَابَ ۩

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

David said, ‘Surely, he has wronged thee in demanding thy ewe in addition to his own ewes. And certainly many partners transgress against one another, except those who believe in God and do good works; and these are but few.’ And David perceived that We had tried him; so he asked forgiveness of his Lord, and fell down bowing in worship and turned to Him.

David said, ‘Surely, he has wronged thee in demanding thy ewe to add to his own ewes. And certainly many partners transgress against one another, except those who believe in God and do good works; and these are but few.’ And David perceived that We had tried him; so he asked forgiveness of his Lord, and fell down bowing in worship and turned to Him.[3395]

Commentary:

David was not taken in by the mask of ordinary litigants that the two intruders had put on; he saw through the game. Though he did not lose his presence of mind and gave his decision like a sane and sedate judge, yet he realized that his control over his people had weakened and that, despite the precautions he had taken, he was not quite safe from the schemes and plots of his enemies. He felt that the incident was a reminder from God. So he adopted the only course which the righteous and the God-fearing adopt in such circumstances. He prayed to God and sought Divine protection against the schemes and conspiracies of his enemies. The insinuation behind the tale of the litigants was that David was a tyrant who was extending his domination over small and weak neighbouring tribes.

David said, ‘Surely, he has wronged thee in asking for thy ewe to add to his own ewes. And certainly many partners transgress against one another, except those who believe in Allah and act righteously; and these are but few.’ And David thought that We had tried him; so he asked forgiveness of his Lord, and fell down bowing in worship and turned[2525] to Him.

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اس نے کہا اس نے تیری ایک دنبی اپنی دنبیوں میں شامل کرنے کا سوال کر کے یقیناً تجھ پر ظلم کیا ہے۔ اور یقیناً بہت سے شریک ہیں کہ ان میں سے بعض، بعض دوسروں پر ظلم کرتے ہیں سوائے ان لوگوں کے جو ایمان لائے اور اعمال صالحہ بجا لائے اور بہت تھوڑے ہیں ایسے لوگ۔ اور دا ؤد نے سمجھ لیا کہ ہم نے اس کی آزمائش کی تھی۔ پس اس نے اپنے ربّ سے بخشش مانگی اور وہ عجز کرتے ہوئے گِر پڑا اور توبہ کی۔

French

David dit : « Assurément, il t’a fait tort en te demandant ta brebis pour qu’elle fasse partie de ses propres brebis. Et certes il y a bien des associés qui transgressent les uns contre les autres, hormis ceux qui croient en Allāh et font de bonnes œuvres ; et ceux-là sont peu nombreux. » Et David s’aperçut que Nous l’avions éprouvé ; alors il demanda pardon à son Seigneur, et tomba se prosternant avec humilité, et se tourna vers Lui.

German

(David) sprach: "Wahrlich, er hat Unrecht an dir getan, dass er dein Mutterschaf zu seinen eigenen Mutterschafen hinzu verlangte. Und gewiss, viele Teilhaber vergehen sich gegeneinander, die nur ausgenommen, die glauben und gute Werke üben; und das sind wenige." Und David merkte, dass Wir ihn auf die Probe* gestellt hatten; also bat er seinen Herrn um Verzeihung und fiel anbetend nieder und bekehrte sich.

Chinese

他 (达五德) 说: “他强求你的一只母羊 (去增加他的羊群), 那他确实侵害了你。的确, 许多共事的人都是互相侵害的, 只有信仰而行善的人例外; 但这些人是很少的。” 达五德领悟我已考验了他;因而他向他的养主祈求宽恕, 倒身下拜, 归向了他。

Italian

David disse: «Certamente, ti ha fatto torto, esigendo la tua pecora, da aggiungere alle sue. E certamente, molti soci si fanno ingiustizie a vicenda, ad eccezione di quelli che credono in Dio e fanno opere buone. Ma sono pochi.» E David si rese conto che Noi l'avevamo messo alla prova. E chiese perdono al suo Signore, e cadde prostrato in adorazione e si volse a Lui.

Spanish

David dijo: “En verdad, él te ha perjudicado pidiéndote tu oveja además de las suyas propias. Pues ciertamente muchos socios se perjudican mutuamente, excepto quienes creen en Dios y practican el bien; mas éstos son pocos”. Y David comprendió que Nosotros lo habíamos probado; por lo que pidió perdón a su Señor y ayó postrado en adoración, volviendo a Él.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اس پر (داؤد نے) کہا۔ تیری دنبی طلب کرنے میں اس نے ظلم [1]سے کام لیا ہے اور بہت سے شرکا ایسے ہوتے ہیں جو ایک دوسرے پر ظلم کرتے ہیں سوائے مومنوں کے اور ان کے جو ایمان کے مطابق عمل کرتے ہیں اور وہ لوگ تھوڑے ہیں۔ اور داؤد کو یقین[2] ہو گیا کہ ہم نے اسے آزمائش میں ڈالا[3] ہے (یعنی دشمنوں کے سر اٹھانے کی وجہ سے) پس اس نے اپنے رب سے استغفار کرنا شروع کیا اور اطاعت ظاہر کرتے ہوئے زمین پر گر گیا اور (خدا کی طرف) متوجہ ہو گیا۔

یعنی اگر یہ تمثیل سچ ہے۔ ورنہ وہ جانتے تھے کہ وہ جھوٹ بول رہے ہیں۔

یعنی دشمنوں کو ایسی جرأت کا پیدا ہونا بتاتا ہے کہ فتنہ ملک میں سر اٹھا رہا ہے۔

یعنی اس طرح کا واقعہ بادشاہ کے ساتھ کبھی پیش نہیں آسکتا جب تک کہ اللہ تعالیٰ کا منشا بھی ویسا ہی نہ ہو۔ تبھی ’’ہم نے اسے آزمائش میں ڈالا ہے‘‘ کے الفاظ استعمال کیے گئے ہیں۔ اور مراد یہ ہے کہ اس فیصلہ میں نظام آسمانی شامل ہے۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

داؤدؑ نے جواب دیا: "اِس شخص نے اپنی دنبیوں کے ساتھ تیری دنبی ملا لینے کا مطالبہ کر کے یقیناً تجھ پر ظلم کیا، اور واقعہ یہ ہے کہ مل جل کر ساتھ رہنے والے لوگ اکثر ایک دوسرے پر زیادتیاں کرتے رہتے ہیں، بس وہی لوگ اس سے بچے ہوئے ہیں جو ایمان رکھتے اور عمل صالح کرتے ہیں، اور ایسے لوگ کم ہی ہیں" (یہ بات کہتے کہتے) داؤدؑ سمجھ گیا کہ یہ تو ہم نے دراصل اس کی آزمائش کی ہے، چنانچہ اس نے اپنے رب سے معافی مانگی اور سجدے میں گر گیا اور رجوع کر لیا

English - Sahih

[David] said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe [in addition] to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allah].

کہا البتہ اس نے تجھ پر ظلم کیا جو تیری دنبی کو اپنی دنبیوں میں ملانے کا سوال کیا گور اکثر شریک ایک دوسرے پر زیادتی کیا کرتے ہیں مگر جو ایماندار ہیں اور انہوں نے نیک کام بھی کیے اور وہ بہت ہی کم ہیں اور داؤد سمجھ گیا کہ ہم نے اسے آزمایا ہے پھر اس نے اپنے رب سے معافی مانگی اور سجدہ میں گر پڑا اور توبہ کی

He said, "Certainly, he has wronged you by demanding your ewe to his ewes. And indeed, many of the partners certainly oppress some of them [on] another except those who believe and do righteous deeds and few (are) they." And became certain Dawood that We (had) tried him, and he asked forgiveness (of) his Lord and fell down bowing and turned in repentance.

Chinese Commentary ^*

اردہ تفصیرِ صغیر نوٹس ^*

یعنی اگر یہ تمثیل سچ ہے۔ ورنہ وہ جانتے تھے کہ وہ جھوٹ بول رہے ہیں۔

یعنی دشمنوں کو ایسی جرأت کا پیدا ہونا بتاتا ہے کہ فتنہ ملک میں سر اٹھا رہا ہے۔

English - Arberry

Said he, 'Assuredly he has wronged thee in asking for thy ewe in addition to his sheep; and indeed many intermixers do injury one against the other, save those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness -- and how few they are!' And David thought that We had only tried him; therefore he sought forgiveness of his Lord, and he fell down, bowing, and he repented.

David said: “He has certainly wronged you in seeking to add your ewe to his ewes; and indeed many who live together commit excesses, one to the other, except those that believe and act righteously; and they are but few.” (While so saying) David realized that it is We Who have put him to test; therefore, he sought the forgiveness of his Lord, and fell down, bowing and penitently turning (to Him).

(David) said: "He is unjust in demanding your ewe to add to his (many) ewes. Many partners are surely -- unjust to one another, except those who believe and do the right; but there are only a few of them." It occurred to David that he was being tried by Us, and he begged his Lord to forgive him, and fell down in homage and repented.

English - Yusuf Ali

(David) said: "He has undoubtedly wronged thee in demanding thy (single) ewe to be added to his (flock of) ewes: truly many are the partners (in business) who wrong each other: Not so do those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and how few are they?"... and David gathered that We had tried him: he asked forgiveness of his Lord, fell down, bowing (in prostration), and turned (to Allah in repentance).
