O ye who believe! enter not the houses of the Prophet unless leave is granted to you for a meal without waiting for its appointed time. But enter when you are invited, and when you have finished eating, disperse, without seeking to engage in talk. That causes inconvenience to the Prophet, and he feels shy of asking you to leave. But Allah is not shy of saying what is true. And when you ask them (the wives of the Prophet) for anything, ask them from behind a curtain. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it behoves you not to cause inconvenience to the Messenger of Allah, nor that you should ever marry his wives after him. Indeed that would be an enormity in the sight of Allah.

And when you ask them—the wives of the Prophet—for anything, ask them[2366] from behind a curtain. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it behoves you not to cause inconvenience to the Messenger of Allah, nor that you should ever marry his wives after him. That, indeed, is a monstrous thing in the sight of Allah.[2367]

اے وہ لوگو جو ایمان لائے ہو! نبی کے گھروں میں داخل نہ ہوا کرو سوائے اس کے کہ تمہیں کھانے کی دعوت دی جائے مگر اس طرح نہیں کہ اس کے پکنے کا انتظار کر رہے ہو لیکن (کھانا تیار ہونے پر) جب تمہیں بلایا جائے تو داخل ہو اور جب تم کھا چکو تو منتشر ہوجاؤ اور وہاں (بیٹھے) باتوں میں نہ لگے رہو۔ یہ (چیز) یقیناً نبی کے لئے تکلیف دہ ہے مگر وہ تم سے (اس کے اظہار پر) شرماتا ہے اور اللہ حق سے نہیں شرماتا۔ اور اگر تم اُن (ازواجِ نبی) سے کوئی چیز مانگو تو پردے کے پیچھے سے مانگا کرو۔ یہ تمہارے اور ان کے دلوں کے لئے زیادہ پاکیزہ (طرزِ عمل) ہے۔ اور تمہارے لئے جائز نہیں کہ تم اللہ کے رسول کو اذیت پہنچاؤ اور نہ ہی یہ جائز ہے کہ اس کے بعد کبھی اُس کی بیویوں (میں سے کسی) سے شادی کرو۔ یقیناً اللہ کے نزدیک یہ بہت بڑی بات ہے۔

French

Ô vous qui croyez ! N’entrez pas dans les maisons du Prophète, à moins que vous ne soyez invités pour un repas et alors aussi n’arrivant pas avant que le repas soit prêt. Mais entrez quand vous y êtes invités ; et quand vous avez fini de manger dispersez-vous, sans chercher à entamer une conversation. Cela incommode le Prophète, et il est gêné de vous demander de partir, mais Allāh n’est pas gêné dedire ce qui est correct. Et quand vous demandez aux épouses du Prophète quelque chose, demandez-le leur de derrière un rideau. Cela est plus pur pour votre cœur et pour leur cœur. Et il ne vous convient pas d’importuner le Messager d’Allāh, et il vous est commandé de ne jamais vous marier avec ses épouses après lui. En vérité, aux yeux d’Allāh cela serait une énormité.

German

O die ihr glaubt! betretet nicht die Häuser des Propheten, es sei denn, dass euch Erlaubnis gegeben ward zu einer Mahlzeit, ohne auf deren Zubereitung zu warten. Sondern wann immer ihr eingeladen seid, tretet ein (zur rechten Zeit); und wenn ihr gespeist habt, so gehet auseinander und säumt nicht zu (weiterer) Unterhaltung. Das verursacht dem Propheten Ungelegenheit und er ist scheu vor euch*, jedoch Allah ist nicht scheu vor der Wahrheit. Und wenn ihr sie** um irgendetwas zu bitten habt, so bittet sie hinter einem Vorhang. Das ist reiner für eure Herzen und ihre Herzen. Und es geziemt euch nicht, den Gesandten Allahs zu belästigen, noch dass ihr je seine Frauen nach ihm heiraten solltet. Fürwahr, das würde vor Allah eine Ungeheuerlichkeit sein.

信仰的人啊! 除非你们应邀赴宴, 不要进入先知家中, (即使是赴宴), 也不要 (早进), 等候饭食。要在被邀请时才进去, 吃过以后, 就得告辞, 不要攀谈久坐, 使先知不便。他 (关切你们的感情) 羞于 (辞退) 你们, 但安拉对于阐明真理是不感到为难的。每当你们向她们 (先知的妻子) 索取东西时, 要从帐幕后索取。这对你们的心和她们的心是更洁净的。不应该使先知为难, 在他之后, 永远不要迎娶他的妻子。(否则,) 这在安拉看来, 确是大罪。[1037]

O voi che credete, non entrate nelle case del profeta a meno che non siate stati invitati per un pasto e anche allora senza aspettare l'ora prestabilita. Ma entrate quando siete invitati, e una volta consumato il vostro pasto, andatevene, senza perdervi in chiacchiere. Ciò è causa di inconvenienti per il profeta, che prova timidezza a dirvi di andarvene; ma Allah non prova timidezza a dire ciò che è vero. E quando chiedete a loro (alle mogli del profeta) alcunché, chiedetelo da dietro una tenda. Ciò è più puro per i vostri cuori e per i loro cuori. E non vi s'addice creare inconvenienti al messaggero di Allah, né sposare mai le sue mogli dopo di lui. Questa sarebbe veramente un eccesso agli occhi di Allah.

¡Oh vosotros, los que creéis! no entréis en las asas del Profeta salvo que se os invite a una comida, y aun entonces no tan pronto que tengáis que esperar a su preparación. Pero entrad cuando seáis invitados, y cuando hayáis terminado de comer, retiraos, sin intentar iniciar una conversación. Esto molestaría al Profeta y Él se avergonzaría de pediros que salgáis. Pero Al-lah no se avergüenza de decir lo que es cierto. Y cuando les pidáis algo (a las esposas del Profeta), pedídselo desde detrás de una cortina. Esto es más puro para vuestros corazones y para los de ellas. Y os corresponde no causar molestia alguna al Mensajero de Al‑lah, ni contraer nunca matrimonio con sus esposas después de él. En verdad esto sería una enormidad a los ojos de Al‑lah.

اے مومنو! نبی کے گھروں میں سوائے اس کے کہ تمہیں کھانے کے لئے بلایا جائے ہرگز داخل نہ[2] ہوا کرو۔ وہ بھی اس شرط سے کہ کھانا پکنے کے انتظار میں نہ بیٹھے رہا کرو۔ اور نہ باتیں کرنے کے شوق میں بیٹھے رہا کرو۔ ہاں! جب تم کو بلایا جائے تو پھر ضرور چلے جایا کرو۔ پھر جب کھانا کھا چکو تو اپنے اپنے گھروں کو چلے جایا کرو[3]۔ یہ امر (یعنی بے فائدہ بیٹھے رہنا یا پہلے آجانا) نبی کو تکلیف دیتا تھا۔ مگر وہ (تمہارے جذبات کا خیال کرکے) تم (کو منع کرنے) سے حیا کرتا تھا۔ مگر اللہ سچی بات بیان کرنے سے (لوگوں کے خیالات کی وجہ سے) باز نہیں رہتا اور (چاہیے کہ) جب تم ان (یعنی نبی کی بیویوں) سے کوئی گھر کی چیز مانگو تو پردہ کے پیچھے سے مانگا کرو۔ یہ بات تمہارے دلوں اور ان کے دلوں کے لئے بہت اچھی ہے اور اللہ کے رسول کو تکلیف دینا تمہارے لئے جائز نہیں اور نہ یہ جائز ہے کہ تم اس کے بعد اس کی بیویوں سے کبھی بھی شادی کرو۔ یہ بات اللہ کے فیصلہ کے مطابق بہت بری ہے۔

اے لوگو جو ایمان لائے ہو، نبیؐ کے گھروں میں بلا اجازت نہ چلے آیا کرو نہ کھانے کا وقت تاکتے رہو ہاں اگر تمہیں کھانے پر بلایا جائے تو ضرور آؤ مگر جب کھانا کھالو تو منتشر ہو جاؤ، باتیں کرنے میں نہ لگے رہو تمہاری یہ حرکتیں نبیؐ کو تکلیف دیتی ہیں، مگر وہ شرم کی وجہ سے کچھ نہیں کہتے اور اللہ حق بات کہنے میں نہیں شرماتا نبیؐ کی بیویوں سے اگر تمہیں کچھ مانگنا ہو تو پردے کے پیچھے سے مانگا کرو، یہ تمہارے اور ان کے دلوں کی پاکیزگی کے لیے زیادہ مناسب طریقہ ہے تمہارے لیے یہ ہرگز جائز نہیں کہ اللہ کے رسولؐ کو تکلیف دو، اور نہ یہ جائز ہے کہ ان کے بعد ان کی بیویوں سے نکاح کرو، یہ اللہ کے نزدیک بہت بڑا گناہ ہے

English - Sahih

O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that [behavior] was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of [dismissing] you. But Allah is not shy of the truth. And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it is not [conceivable or lawful] for you to harm the Messenger of Allah or to marry his wives after him, ever. Indeed, that would be in the sight of Allah an enormity.

اے ایمان والو نبی کے گھروں میں داخل نہ ہو مگر اس وقت کہ تمہیں کھانے کےلئے اجازت دی جائے نہ اس کی تیاری کا انتظام کرتے ہوئے لیکن جب تمہیں بلایا جائے تب داخل ہو پھر جب تم کھا چکو تو اٹھ کر چلے جاؤ اور باتوں کے لیے جم کر نہ بیٹھو کیوں کہ اس سے نبی کو تکلیف پہنچتی ہے اور وہ تم سے شرم کرتا ہے اور حق بات کہنے سے الله شرم نہیں کرتا اور جب نبی کی بیویوں سے کوئی چیز مانگو تو پردہ کے باہر سے مانگا کرو اس میں تمہارے اوران کے دلوں کے لیے بہت پاکیزگی ہے اور تمہارے لیے جائز نہیں کہ تم رسول الله کو ایذا دو اور نہ یہ کہ تم اپ کی بیویوں سے آپ کے بعد کبھی بھی نکاح کرو بے شک یہ الله کےنزدیک بڑا گناہ ہے

O believers, enter not the houses of the Prophet, except leave is given you for a meal, without watching for its hour. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have had the meal, disperse, neither lingering for idle talk; that is hurtful to the Prophet, and he is ashamed before you; but God is not ashamed before the truth. And when you ask his wives for any object, ask them from behind a curtain; that is cleaner for your hearts and theirs. It is not for you to hurt God's Messenger, neither to marry his wives after him, ever; surely that would be, in God's sight, a monstrous thing.

Do not linger in idle talk. That is hurtful to the Prophet but he does not express it out of shyness; but Allah is not ashamed of speaking out the Truth. Commentary:

The teaching of social ethics and domestic morals and manners with special reference to the Holy Prophet’s marriage with Zainab and the calumnies and false charges of which the evil-minded hypocrites accused him form the subject of the present verse. Some of the social manners taught in this verse are: One should not enter a house uninvited and when invited one should be punctual. It is as bad to be before time as to be behind time. After meals one should depart, not wasting one’s own and other peoples’ time in the usual post-prandial idle talk. These are some of the rules of social conduct which need to be learnt and observed.

The commandment embodied in the words, "and when you ask them for anything, ask them from behind a curtain," is intended to discourage too much familiarity between the sexes, the pronoun ھن (them) by implication, applying to all women.

The clause, "That is purer for your hearts and their hearts," may mean; (a) that it may lead to purity of thoughts, and (b) that such conduct may protect women from slanderous tongues.

Marriage to the widows of the Holy Prophet has been declared a grievous sin in this verse. Being the "Mothers of the Faithful" it was inconsistent with their spiritual dignity to marry any of their "spiritual sons." Moreover, as wives of the Prophet, they were entrusted with the great task of the spiritual training of Muslim men and women which required utmost reverence for them on their part.
