And those who followed shall say: ‘If we could only return, we would disown them as they have disowned us.’ Thus will Allah show them their works as anguish for them, and they shall not get out of the Fire.

And those who followed shall say: [b]‘If we could only return, we would disown them as they have disowned us.’ Thus will Allah show them their works as anguish for them, and they shall not get out of the Fire.[174]

Important Words:

کرة (return) is the infinitive noun from کر. They say کر الفارس i.e. the horseman returned to the attack after he had raced back. فعله کرة بعدکرة means, he did it again and again. کرة therefore means: (1) returning to the attack; (2) returning to the original state (3) a turn or time (Mufradat & Aqrab).

حسرات (anguish) is the plural of حسرة which is derived from حسر. They say حسرالبحر i.e. the sea sank or receded from the shore. حسرالرجل means: (1) the man was tired and wearied (2) he was sorrowful and grieved. حسرة means: (1) feeling intense anguish at a loss sustained or harm suffered; (2) regret or compunction; (3) grief or sorrow for a thing that has escaped one (Aqrab & Taj).

Commentary:

Having despaired of receiving help from their leaders, the disbelievers will, on the Day of Judgement, wish that they may be sent back to the world so that they may denounce these leaders in this world just as they were disowning them in the next. But this will be only a vain desire doomed to perish unfulfilled. Nay, the selfsame desire will become a source of anguish and punishment for them.

The clause, they shall not get out of the Fire, does not mean that the punishment of Hell will be unending. Islam does not believe in the eternity of Hell. While the Quran speaks of the blessings of Paradise as never-ending and everlasting, it does not say so of the punishment of Hell but simply speaks of it as being very long (11:108, 109). The sayings of the Holy Prophet also support this view. "There will come a time over Hell," he is reported to have said, "when there will remain none in it" (‘Ummal). The verse only means that, being unable to bear the torment of Hell, the dwellers of the Fire will wish to come out of it, but will not be able to do so (32:21), until their term of punishment is over. The word Fire as used in this verse may also mean the fire of anguish and agony in which they shall burn on account of their designs and cherished hopes having come to naught.

اور وہ لوگ جنہوں نے پیروی کی کہیں گے کاش! ہمیں ایک اور موقع ملتا تو ہم ان سے اسی طرح بیزاری کا اظہار کرتے جس طرح انہوں نے ہم سے بیزاری کا اظہار کیا ہے۔ اسی طرح اللہ انہیں ان کے اعمال ان پر حسرتیں بنا کر دکھائے گا اور وہ (اس) آگ سے نکل نہیں سکیں گے۔

French

Et leurs disciples diront : « Si seulement nous pouvions effectuer un retour, nous les renierions comme ils nous ont reniés. » C’est ainsi qu’Allāh leur montrera leurs œuvres comme autant de sources de remords pour eux et ils ne pourront sortir du Feu.

Und die, welche folgten, werden sprechen: "Könnten wir nur umkehren, wir würden uns von ihnen lossagen wie sie sich von uns losgesagt haben." Also wird Allah ihnen ihre Werke zeigen, eine Pein für sie, und sie werden dem Feuer nicht entrinnen.

E quelli che seguirono diranno: «Se appena potessimo tornare indietro, noi li ripudieremmo, come essi ci hanno ripudiati.» Così Allah mostrerà loro le loro opere come un tormento per loro, ed essi non usciranno dal fuoco.

Y los que seguían dirán: “Si al menos pudiéramos volver, los repudiaríamos como nos han repudiado a nosotros”. Así Al-lah les mostrará sus obras con gran congoja para ellos, y no saldrán del Fuego.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور جو لوگ (ائمتہ الکفر کے) فرمانبردار تھے کہیں گے کہ کاش ہمیں ایک دفعہ (پھر دنیا میں) واپس جانا (نصیب) ہوتا تو ہم (بھی) ان (ائمتہ الکفر) سے الگ ہو جاتے جس طرح (آج) یہ ہم سے الگ ہو گئے اس طرح اللہ انہیں بتائے [1]گا کہ ان کے اعمال (کا نتیجہ چند) حسرتیں ہیں (جو) ان (ہی) پر (وبال ہو کر پڑیں گی) اور وہ (دوزخ کی) آگ میں سے ہر گز نہیں نکل سکیں گے۔

اور وہ لوگ جو دنیا میں اُن کی پیروی کرتے تھے، کہیں گے کہ کاش ہم کو پھر ایک موقع دیا جاتا تو جس طرح آج یہ ہم سے بیزاری ظاہر کر رہے ہیں، ہم اِن سے بیزار ہو کر دکھا دیتے یوں اللہ اِن لوگوں کے وہ اعمال جو یہ دنیا میں کر رہے ہیں، ان کے سامنے اِس طرح لائے گا کہ یہ حسرتوں اور پشیمانیوں کے ساتھ ہاتھ ملتے رہیں گے مگر آگ سے نکلنے کی کوئی راہ نہ پائیں گے

English - Sahih

Those who followed will say, "If only we had another turn [at worldly life] so we could disassociate ourselves from them as they have disassociated themselves from us." Thus will Allah show them their deeds as regrets upon them. And they are never to emerge from the Fire.

اور کہیں گے وہ لوگ جنہوں نے پیروی کی تھی کاش ہمیں دوبارہ جانا ہوتا تو ہم بھی ان سے بیزار ہوجاتے جیسے یہ ہم سے بیزار ہو جاتے جیسے یہ ہم سے بیزار ہوئے ہیں اسی طرح الله انہیں ان کے اعمال حسرت دلانے کے لیے دکھائے گا اور وہ دوزخ سے نکلنے والے نہیں

and those that followed say, 'O if only we might return again and disown them, as they have disowned us!' Even so God shall show them their works. O bitter regrets for them! Never shall they issue from the Fire.

Then those who followed them will say, "Would that we were given another chance to return to the world: then we will disown them just as they have disowned us today." Thus will Allah bring before them the deeds they did in the world in such a manner as to make them wring their hands in regret but they shall be unable to come out of the Fire.
