And when to one of them is conveyed the tidings of the birth of a female, his face darkens, while he suppresses his inward grief.

Iswadda Wajhu-hu means, his face became black, i.e. his face became expressive of grief or overcast with gloom; he became grieved, sorrowful or confounded; he became disgraced (Lane).
