After stating that the four things mentioned in the previous verse are all abomination in one sense or another, the present verse is confined to two of them—wine and games of chance—and gives additional reasons against them. These reasons rest on political, social, spiritual and socio-religious grounds, these being implied in the words "enmity and hatred and keeping back from the remembrance of Allah and from Prayer."
Commentary:
After stating that the four things mentioned in the previous verse are all رجس (abomination) in one sense or another, the present verse confines itself to two of the four mentioned things—wine and games of hazard—and gives additional reasons against them. These reasons are, as stated in the verse, four in number and rest on political, social, spiritual and socio-religious grounds, this being hinted in the words "enmity and hatred and keeping back from the remembrance of Allah and from Prayer". The interrogation in the clause, But will you keep back?, embodies a strong admonition not to do the thing, the use of the interrogative form being the most effective form of exhortation. See also 2:220.

یکلؤکم (can protect you) is derived from کلأ (kala’a). They say کلأ اللّٰه فلاناً i.e. God guarded such a one or kept him safe. The Arabs say اذھبوا فی کلأة اللّٰه i.e. go ye in the safe keeping of God. کلأ القوم means, he acted as a scout for the party. کلأ الدین means, the payment of thedebt was postponed or delayed (Lane & Aqrab).
The expression من الرحمان may mean: (a) against or from the Gracious God. The verse means, who can save you from the punishment of the Gracious God: or (b) the expression may mean, instead of the Gracious God i.e. who can save you instead of God if He does not save you.
Commentary:
The verse purports to say that there are many calamities, catastrophes, diseases and afflictions that take their birth at night and there are others that are born in the daytime. Man is completely unaware of what misfortunes hang over his head. It is the Gracious God Who protects him from them and yet the ungrateful people deny and reject the Divine teachings that are sent down for their spiritual regeneration.
The clause "yet they turn away from the remembrance of God," signifies that when disbelievers are told that God has made every provision for their physical needs, they readily admit it. But when they are told that He has made similar provision for their spiritual needs they turn aside with disdain and refuse to admit that such a thing can happen.
Spiritually speaking the verse implies that whenever a spiritual sun or moon makes its appearance, calamities and miseries overtake men to establish the truth of the claim of the Divine Reformer because it is rejected and the Reformer himself is persecuted.

The verse constitutes a great testimonial to the righteousness and goodness of the Holy Prophet’s Companions and to their love for God. They are men, says the verse, of flesh and bones. Yet amidst all their mundane pursuits and engagements they do not neglect to discharge their duties to God and man.

"Those who, if We establish them in the earth will observe Prayer and pay the Zakah and enjoin good and forbid evil" (22:42), and "Their sides keep away from their beds; and they call upon their Lord in fear and hope, and spend out of what We have bestowed upon them" (32:17). It is because of this life of righteousness and service of humanity that "Allah was well pleased with them, and they were well pleased with Him" (58:23).

‘An denotes transition; compensation (2:49); superiority (47:39). It also denotes a cause as in the present verse, and it has the same sense as li (53:4).
God had bestowed upon Solomon power and wealth. He ruled over a vast kingdom and, therefore, he had to keep a strong army. Naturally, he had a great liking for horses of good breed because cavalry formed a strong wing of his army. Solomon’s love for horses was not that of a race-goer or a professional breeder of horses. It only sprang from his love for his Creator as the horses were used for fighting in the cause of God.
Important Words:
عن (because) is a preposition and as such it has several meanings:
1. It denotes transition as in the saying سافرت عن البلد i.e. I journeyed from the town.
2. It denotes compensation as in the verse لاتجزی نفس عن نفس شیئاً i.e. no soul shall serve as a substitute for another soul (2:49).
3. It denotes superiority i.e. being synonymous with علی as in the verse فانـما یبخل عن نفسه i.e. And whoso is niggardly, is niggardly only against his own soul or is niggardly only to himself (47:39).
4. It denotes a cause as in the verse under comment and also in the verse وما نـحن بتارکی آلـھتنا عن قولك i.e. we are not going to forsake our gods because of thy saying (11:54).
5. It is synonymous with بعد (after) as in the verse لترکبن طبقا عن طبق, meaning حالة بعد حالة i.e. you will surely pass on from one stage to another (84:20).
6. It is also synonymous with من (from) as in the verse الذی یقبل التوبة عن عبادہ i.e. He it is Who accepts repentance from His servants (42:26).
7. It has the same sense as ب (by or with) as in the verse وما ینطق عن الـھوی i.e. nor does he speak with the desire of self-gratification (53:4).
8. It denotes the using of a thing as an aid or instrument as in the saying: رمیت عن القوس i.e. I shot with or by means of the bow (Lane).
Commentary:
God had bestowed upon Solomon power and wealth. He ruled over a vast kingdom and, therefore, he had to keep a strong army. Naturally, he had a great liking for horses of good breed because cavalry formed a strong wing of his army which was so necessary to guard and protect his God-given and far-flung kingdom—a great stronghold of truth and righteousness. So Solomon’s love for horses was not that of a race-goer or a professional breeder of horses. It only sprang from his love for his Creator as the horses were used for fighting in the cause of God.

In the verse under comment the Qur’an has been described as Kitaban Mutashabihan signifying that it is a Book which is susceptible of different interpretations which are consistent with and support each other. There is no contradiction or inconsistency anywhere in the Qur’an. This constitutes one of its inimitable excellences. Another excellence of the Qur’an lies in the fact that it has made use of metaphors, allegories and parables. This greatly adds to the beauty and grace of its style and assures vastness of meaning in the fewest possible words. In the preceding verses mention was made of the Jews who rejected the Holy Prophet’s Message and who profaned their Sabbath and consequently incurred God’s displeasure. In the present verse, however, Muslims have been enjoined to be particularly careful about the obligatory Friday Prayer. Every people has a Sabbath and the Muslim Sabbath is Friday. As the Surah seems particularly to deal with the time of the Promised Messiah, the call for Friday Prayer may also signify his clarion call to Muslims to listen to his Message.

In the present verse, however, Muslims have been enjoined to be particularly careful about the obligatory Friday Prayer. Every people has a Sabbath and the Muslim Sabbath is Friday. As soon as call for Prayer is made all business is to cease and the Faithful should attend the mosque to listen to the Imam’s sermon (khutbah), which usually deals with some topical subject concerning the moral and social needs of the community and how to fulfil them.
As the Surah seems particularly to deal with the time of the Promised Messiah, the call for Friday Prayer may also signify his clarion call to Muslims to listen to his Message.

Commentary:
The believers have been informed in this and the next verse that God demands from them the sacrifice of their wealth and offsprings in the cause of Truth, since it is sacrifice that distinguishes true believers from the hypocrites.

Wealth is a source of great trial and temptation. Instead of being grateful to God for His bestowing riches upon them, wealthy people generally are neglectful of their duties to God and man.
