سَرْمَدٌ [signifies, or implies,] Continuance, or
incessant continuance, (دَوَام, Kh, M, L, and
اِتِّصَال, Kh, L,) of time, (Kh, M, L,) either of
night or of day. (Kh, L.) [I have said “ or
implies ” because I have not found it used otherwise than as an epithet, in the following senses.]

endlessly; syn. دَائِمٌ; (Zj, S, L, K;) or دَائِمٌ لَا
يَنْقَطِعُ. (Nh, L.) It is applied in this sense to
night (Nh, L) [and also to day: to each in the
Kur xxviii. 71 and 72]: and to night as meaning
Long. (L, K.) ―
2-b3- Accord. to El-Fakhr Er-Rázee,
it is derived from السَّرْدُ, which denotes consecutiveness and uninterruptedness, and the م is added
to give intensiveness to the signification: if so,
its proper place is in art. سرد; its measure being
فَعْمَلٌ: (MF:) [thus] its م is augmentative like
the م in دُلَامِصٌ. (Bd in xxviii. 71.) ―
2-b4- One says
also, هُوَ لَكَ سَرْمَدًا He, or it, is thine ever, or for
ever. (Mgh in art. سمد.)

قُلْ أَرَءَيْتُمْ إِن جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلَّيْلَ سَرْمَدًا إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ مَنْ إِلَٰهٌ غَيْرُ ٱللَّهِ يَأْتِيكُم بِضِيَآءٍ ۖ أَفَلَا تَسْمَعُونَ
English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ra
Say, ‘Tell me, if Allah make the night continue over you till the Day of Resurrection, what God is there besides Allah who could bring you light? Will you not then hearken?’
اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ
تُو کہہ دے کہ مجھے بتاؤ تو سہی کہ اگر اللہ تم پر رات قیامت کے دن تک دراز کر دے تو اللہ کے سوا کون معبود ہے جو تمہارے پاس کوئی روشنی لا سکے؟ پس کیا تم سنو گے نہیں؟

Dis : « Dites-moi, si Allāh faisait durer sur vous la nuit jusqu’au Jour de la Résurrection, quel dieu y a-t-il en dehors d’Allāh qui pourrait vous apporter la lumière ? Ne voulez-vous donc pas prêter l’oreille ? »

تو (ان سے) کہہ‘ مجھے بتاؤ[1] تو سہی اگر اللہ تمہارے لئے قیامت کے دن تک رات کو لمبا کر دے تو اللہ کے سوا اور کون ہے جو تمہارے پاس روشنی لائے گا؟ کیا تم سنتے نہیں۔

English - Short Commentary Translation
Say, ‘Tell me, if Allah should make the day to continue perpetually over you till the Day of Resurrection, what god is there other than Allah who could bring you night wherein you could rest?[2230] Will you not then see?’
Whereas both perpetual work and perpetual rest are injurious to man’s physical health, periodical rest in the form of night and periodical work in the shape of day are great boons of God. At night our jaded and tired limbs are rested and we are able with renewed vigour to do the next day’s work, and in the day we work and earn our livelihood. Thus their alternation constitutes a great Divine blessing.

Commentary:
While speaking of "the day" as in the present verse, the Quran uses the words "will you not then see" and when speaking of "the night" as in the preceding verse it uses the words, "will you not then hearken", the reason being that one cannot properly see at night.
