۞ وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ تُعْجِبُكَ أَجْسَامُهُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَقُولُوا۟ تَسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِهِمْ ۖ كَأَنَّهُمْ خُشُبٌ مُّسَنَّدَةٌ ۖ يَحْسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَيْحَةٍ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ هُمُ ٱلْعَدُوُّ فَٱحْذَرْهُمْ ۚ قَٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۖ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And when thou seest them, their figures please thee; and if they speak, thou listenest to their speech. They are as though they were blocks of wood propped up. They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. Allah’s curse be upon them! How are they being turned away!

2:205.

Important Words:

مسندة (propped up) is derived from سند. They say سند الیه i.e. he leaned, rested or stayed himself against it or upon it. سند فی الجبلmeans, he ascended the mountain. سند (sannada) means, he set up pieces of wood as stays or props against a wall; he wore or clad himself with garments called سند (sanadun). The word also means, a thing upon or against which one leans, rests or stays himself, or a person upon whom one leans; mountain slope (Lane & Aqrab).

Commentary:

In this verse the hypocrites have been compared to blocks of wood propped up, or pieces of wood dressed up with clothes, which signifies that a hypocrite lacks self-reliance. He is always in search of some person or thing upon which to rest or lean. Or the word may signify that his interior does not correspond to his exterior. He so conducts himself that while outwardly he appears to be a reasonable, dignified and honest person, inwardly he is quite hollow and rotten to the core. He seeks to please with his glib talk but, being a coward, he suspects danger in every crisis.

And when thou seest them, their figures please thee; [d]and when they speak, thou listenest to their speech. Allah’s curse be upon them, how are they being turned away from the truth!

2:205.

A hypocrite lacks self-reliance. He is always in search of someone upon whom to lean. Or, the verse may signify that his interior does not correspond to his exterior. He so conducts himself that while outwardly he appears to be a reasonable, dignified and honest person, inwardly he is quite hollow and rotten to the core. He seeks to please people with his glib talk but, being a coward, he suspects and sees danger everywhere.

اور جب تو انہیں دیکھتا ہے تو ان کے جسم تیرا دل لبھاتے ہیں اور اگر وہ کچھ بولیں تو تُو اُن کی بات سنتا ہے۔ وہ ایسے ہیں جیسے ایک دوسرے کے سہارے چنی ہوئی خشک لکڑیاں۔ وہ بجلی کے ہر کڑکے کو اپنے ہی اوپر (کڑکتا ہوا) سمجھتے ہیں۔ وہی دشمن ہیں پس اُن (کے شر) سے بچ۔ اللہ کی اُن پر لعنت ہو۔ وہ کہاں اُلٹے پھرائے جاتے ہیں۔

French

Et quand tu les vois, leur apparence physique te plaît et s’ils parlent, tu écoutes leur discours ; comme si ils étaient des bûches dressées se supportant les unes les autres. Ils s’imaginent que chaque calamité va les frapper. Ce sont eux l’ennemi ; prends donc garde à eux. Que la malédiction d’Allāh soit sur eux ! Comme ils sont détournés !

German

Und wenn du sie siehst, so gefallen dir ihre Gestalten; und wenn sie sprechen, horchst du auf ihre Rede. Sie sind, als wären sie aufgerichtete Holzklötze. Sie glauben, jeder Schrei sei wider sie. Sie sind der Feind, drum hüte dich vor ihnen. Allahs Fluch über sie! Wie werden sie abgewendet!

当你看见他们时, 他们的身体讨你喜欢; [d]当他们说话时, 你倾听他们的言语。他们就好像是被撑起来的木偶。[1431]他们以为所有 («古兰经»启示的) 的惩罚都是为他们而发的。他们是敌人, 所以要提防他们。愿安拉毁灭他们!他们 (远离真理的道路), 被转变到哪里去呀!

2:205.

伪信者缺乏自立精神。他总是寻求可以依赖的人。这节经文也可以表示, 伪信者内外不一。他的做人就是这样, 外表似乎是通情达理、道貌岸然的老实人而内在却十分空虚, 腐朽透顶。他只想花言巧语, 讨好人家, 可是胆小如鼠, 疑心重重, 但见四面楚歌。

E quando li vedi, il loro aspetto ti piace. E se parlano, ascolti i loro discorsi. Mentre sono come tronchi di legno puntellati. Temono che ogni grido sia contro di loro. Sono loro i nemici, per cui sta' attento. La maledizione di Allah sia su di loro. Quanto si sono allontanati!

Spanish

Mas cuando los ves, su aspecto te agrada; y si hablan, escuchas sus palabras. En cambio son como ramas secas apuntaladas. Temen que toda calamidad se abata sobre ellos. Son el enemigo. Cuídate, pues, de ellos. ¡Que sean malditos de Al-lah! ¡Cómo se están extraviando!

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

جب تو ان کو دیکھتا ہے تو ان کے مضبوط جسم تجھے خوب بھاتے ہیں۔ اور اگر وہ کوئی بات کرتے ہیں (تو ایسے شاندار طریقے سے کہ) تو ان کی بات کو (باوجود ان کے حالات جاننے کے) سن لیتا ہے (وہ مجلس میں اس طرح بیٹھے ہوئے ہوتے ہیں) گویا کہ وہ بڑے بڑے شہتیر ہیں جو (دیوار سے) اٹکائے ہوئے ہیں۔ جب کسی عذاب کی خبر (قرآن میں) نازل ہو تو وہ سمجھتے ہیں کہ یہ ہمارے ہی متعلق ہے۔ وہ پکے دشمن ہیں پس تو ان سے ہوشیار رہ۔ اللہ ان کو ہلاک کرے‘ وہ کہاں سے پھرا کر (راہ حق سے دور) لے جائے جاتے ہیں۔

اِنہیں دیکھو تو اِن کے جثے تمہیں بڑے شاندار نظر آئیں بولیں تو تم ان کی باتیں سنتے رہ جاؤ مگر اصل میں یہ گویا لکڑی کے کندے ہیں جو دیوار کے ساتھ چن کر رکھ دیے گئے ہوں ہر زور کی آواز کو یہ اپنے خلاف سمجھتے ہیں یہ پکے دشمن ہیں، ان سے بچ کر رہو، اللہ کی مار ان پر، یہ کدھر الٹے پھرائے جا رہے ہیں

English - Sahih

And when you see them, their forms please you, and if they speak, you listen to their speech. [They are] as if they were pieces of wood propped up - they think that every shout is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded?

اور جب آپ ان کو دیکھیں تو اپ کو ان کے ڈیل ڈول اچھے لگیں اور اگر وہ بات کریں تو آپ انکی بات سن لیں گویا کہ وہ دیوار سے لگی ہوئی لکڑیاں ہیں وہ ہر آواز کو اپنے ہی اُوپر خیال کرتے ہیں وہی دشمن ہیں پس ان سے ہوشیار رہيے الله انہیں غارت کرے کہاں وہ بہکے جا رہے ہیں

English - Arberry

When thou seest them, their bodies please thee; but when they speak, thou listenest to their speech, and it is as they were propped-up timbers. They think every cry is against them. They are the enemy; so beware of them. God assail them! How they are perverted!

English - Maududi

When you look at them, their persons are pleasing, and when they speak, you pay heed to what they say. But in truth they are (merely) beams of timber propped-up (against a wall). They consider every shout they hear to be directed against them. They are your utter enemies; guard against them. May Allah do away with them! How are they being turned away (from the Truth)?

Pleasing seem their persons when you look at them; and when they talk, you listen to their speech. Yet they are like the wooden panelling of a wall. They imagine every rebuke to be directed against them. They are the enemies, beware of them. May God damn them, how pervert are they!
