Hast thou not seen those who were forbidden to hold secret counsels and again return to what they were forbidden, and confer secretly for sin and transgression and disobedience to the Messenger? And when they come to thee, they greet thee with a greeting with which Allah has not greeted thee; but among themselves they say, ‘Why does not Allah punish us for what we say?’ Sufficient for them is Hell, wherein they will burn; and a most evil destination it is!

کیا تُونے اُن کی طرف نظر نہیں دوڑائی جنہیں خفیہ مشوروں سے منع کیا گیا مگر وہ پھر وہی کچھ کرنے لگے جس سے ان کو منع کیا گیا تھا؟ اور وہ گناہ، سرکشی اور رسول کی نافرمانی کے متعلق باہم خفیہ مشورے کرتے ہیں۔ اور جب وہ تیرے پاس آتے ہیں تو وہ اس طریق پر تجھ سے خیرسگالی کا اظہار کرتے ہیں جس طریق پر اللہ نے تجھ پر سلام نہیں بھیجا اور وہ اپنے دلوں میں کہتے ہیں کہ اللہ ہمیں اس پر عذاب کیوں نہیں دیتا جو ہم کہتے ہیں، ان (سے نپٹنے) کو جہنّم کافی ہوگی۔ وہ اس میں داخل ہوں گے۔ پس کیا ہی بُرا ٹھکانا ہے۔

French

N’as-tu pas vu ceux à qui les entretiens secrets ont été interdits, et qui reviennent à ce qui leur a été interdit, et qui confèrent secrètement pour le péché et la transgression, et pour la désobéissance au Messager ? Et lorsqu’ils viennent à toi, ils te saluent d’une salutation dont Allāh ne t’a pas salué ; mais ils se disent entre eux : « Pourquoi Allāh ne nous punit-Il pas pour ce que nous disons ? » L’Enfer leur suffit, dans lequel ils brûleront ; et quelle mauvaise destination !

German

Hast du nicht die beobachtet, denen geheime Verschwörung verboten ward und die doch zurückkehren zu dem, was ihnen verboten ward, und sich insgeheim verschwören zu Sünde und Übertretung und Ungehorsam gegen den Gesandten? Und wenn sie zu dir kommen, so begrüßen sie dich mit dem, womit dich nicht Allah begrüßt hat; bei sich aber sprechen sie: "Warum straft uns Allah nicht für das, was wir (wider ihn) sprechen?" Genügend für sie ist die Hölle, worin sie eingehen werden; und übel ist die Bestimmung!

你没有看到原来受禁秘密商议, 而后违犯此项禁令的人? 他们为犯罪、越规和违背使者[1404]而密议。当他们来到你这里时, 他们用安拉所未对你使用的[a]贺词祝贺你,[1405]但在他们之间, 他们却说: “安拉为什么不因我们所说的话惩罚我们? ”火狱对他们是足够的了, 他们将进入其中, 那归宿是最坏呀!

Non vedi coloro ai quali era stato proibito di tenere incontri segreti, che poi tornano a quanto era stato loro proibito, e conferiscono in segreto su come peccare e trasgredire e disobbedire al messaggero? E quando vengono a te, ti salutano con un saluto che non è quello con cui Allah ti ha salutato. Ma tra loro dicono: «Perché Allah non ci punisce per quello che diciamo?» Per loro è sufficiente l'Inferno, dove bruceranno. Ed è una destinazione quanto mai cattiva!

¿No has visto a quienes se les prohibió celebrar conversaciones secretas y que volvieron, sin embargo, a lo que se les prohibió; que tratan en secreto del pecado, la trasgresión y la esobediencia al Mensajero? Mas cuando llegan a ti, te saludan con un saludo con el que Al-lah no te ha saludado; mas entre ellos se dicen: “¿Por qué Al-lah no nos castiga por lo que decimos?”. Les bastará el Infierno en el que arderán; ¡qué pésimo destino es!

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

کیا تو نے ان (لوگوں) کو نہیں دیکھا جن کو خفیہ سازشوں سے منع کیا گیا پھر بھی وہ اس ممنوع چیز کی طرف لوٹتے ہی رہتے ہیں اور گناہ اور زیادتی اور رسول کی نافرمانی کی باتوں کے متعلق مشورہ کرتے ہیں اور جب وہ تیرے پاس آتے ہیں تو تجھے ایسے لفظوں میں دعا دیتے ہیں جن (لفظوں) میں خدا [1]نے دعا نہیں دی اور اپنے دلوں میں کہتے ہیں کہ کیوں اللہ ہمارے (منافقانہ) قول کی وجہ سے ہمیں عذاب نہیں دیتا۔ جہنم ان لوگوں کے لئے کافی ہے۔ وہ اس میں داخل ہونگے اور وہ بہت برا ٹھکانا ہے۔

کیا تم نے دیکھا نہیں اُن لوگوں کو جنہیں سرگوشیاں کرنے سے منع کر دیا گیا تھا پھر بھی وہ وہی حرکت کیے جاتے ہیں جس سے انہیں منع کیا گیا تھا؟ یہ لوگ چھپ چھپ کر آپس میں گناہ اور زیادتی اور رسول کی نافرمانی کی باتیں کرتے ہیں، اور جب تمہارے پاس آتے ہیں تو تمہیں اُس طریقے سے سلام کرتے ہیں جس طرح اللہ نے تم پر سلام نہیں کیا ہے اور اپنے دلوں میں کہتے ہیں کہ ہماری اِن باتوں پر اللہ ہمیں عذاب کیوں نہیں دیتا اُن کے لیے جہنم ہی کافی ہے اُسی کا وہ ایندھن بنیں گے بڑا ہی برا انجام ہے اُن کا

Have you not considered those who were forbidden from private conversation, then they return to that which they were forbidden and converse among themselves about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger? And when they come to you, they greet you with that [word] by which Allah does not greet you and say among themselves, "Why does Allah not punish us for what we say?" Sufficient for them is Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the destination.

Do not you see [to] those who were forbidden from secret counsels, then they return to what they were forbidden from [it], and they hold secret counsels for sin and aggression and disobedience (to) the Messenger? Hast thou not regarded those who were forbidden to converse secretly together, then they return to that they were forbidden, and they converse secretly together in sin and enmity, and in disobedience to the Messenger? Then, when they come to thee, they greet thee with a greeting God never greeted thee withal; and they say within themselves, 'Why does God not chastise us for what we say?' Sufficient for them shall be Gehenna, at which they, shall be roasted -- an evil homecoming!

Have you not seen those who were forbidden to whisper and yet they engaged in what they had been forbidden? They secretly converse among themselves concerning sin and transgression and disobedience to the Messenger. Commentary:

The words, "they greet thee with which Allah has not greeted thee," may either mean that they go beyond proper limits in hypocritically praising thee, or that they invoke death and destruction upon thee. The words seem to refer to the evil practice of some of the Jews of Medina that when they came to see the Holy Prophet they, with a little twist of the tongue, would invoke curses upon him by saying السام علیک i.e. death to thee; instead of saluting him with the usual السلام علیک i.e. peace be upon thee (Bukhari). See also 2:105.

The verse refers to the secret plots and conspiracies against Islam of the Jews and the Hypocrites of Medina and condemns this evil practice. The expulsion of the three Jewish tribes from Medina was the result of their repeated acts of defection and infidelity and their secret plots against Islam and the life of the Holy Prophet.

The meaning is that they go beyond proper limits in hypocritically praising thee; or they invoke death and destruction upon thee. The words seem to refer to the evil practice of some of the Jews of Medina that when they came to the Holy Prophet they, with a little twist of the tongue, would invoke curses upon him by saying As-Samu ‘Alaika (death to thee), instead of saluting him with the usual As-Salamu ‘Alaika, i.e. 'peace be upon thee' (Bukhari).
