Dost thou not know of those to whom it was said: ‘Restrain your hands, observe Prayer and pay the Zakat?’ And when fighting has been prescribed for them, behold! a section of them fear men as they should fear Allah, or with still greater fear; and they say, ‘Our Lord, why hast Thou prescribed fighting for us? Wouldst Thou not grant us respite yet a while?’ Say, ‘The benefit of this world is little and the Hereafter will be better for him who fears God; and you shall not be wronged a whit.’

کیا تُو نے ان لوگوں کی طرف نظر نہیں دوڑائی جنہیں کہا گیا تھا کہ اپنے ہاتھ روک لو اور نماز قائم کرو اور زکوٰۃ دو۔ پھر جب قتال ان پر فرض کیا گیا تو اچانک ان میں سے ایک گروہ لوگوں سے ایسا ڈرنے لگا جیسے اللہ سے ڈرا جاتا ہے یا اس سے بھی بڑھ کر۔ اور انہوں نے کہا اے ہمارے ربّ! تو نے کیوں ہم پر قتال فرض کر دیا۔ کیوں نہ تُو نے ہمیں تھوڑی مدت کےلئے اور مہلت دی۔ تُو کہہ دے کہ دنیا کی منفعت تھوڑی ہے۔ اور آخرت اس کے لئے بہت بہتر ہے جس نے تقویٰ اختیار کیا۔ اور تم کھجور کی گٹھلی کی لکیر کے برابر بھی ظلم نہیں کئے جاؤ گے۔

French

N’as-tu pas entendu parler de ceux à qui il fut dit : « Retenez vos mains, observez la Prière et payez la Zakāt » ? Et quand il leur a été commandé de combattre, voilà qu’une partie d’entre eux se mirent à craindre les hommes comme ils devraient craindre Allāh, ou encore davantage et ils dirent : « Notre Seigneur, pourquoi nous as-Tu prescrit le combat ? Pourquoi ne nous accordes-Tu pas du répit pour quelque temps » ? Dis : « Les avantages d’ici-bas sont peu, et l’au-delà vaudra mieux pour celui qui craint Allāh ; et vous ne serez pas lésés, même pas d’un iota. »

German

Hast du nicht Kunde von denen, welchen gesagt wurde: "Zügelt eure Hände, verrichtet das Gebet und zahlet die Zakât"? Doch wenn ihnen Kampf verordnet wurde, da fürchtete ein Teil von ihnen die Menschen, wie man Allah fürchtet, oder mit noch größerer Furcht; und sie sagten: "Unser Herr, warum hast Du uns Kampf verordnet? Möchtest Du uns nicht noch eine Weile Aufschub gewähren?" Sprich: "Der Vorteil dieser Welt ist gering und das Jenseits wird besser sein für den Gottesfürchtigen; und kein Quentchen Unrecht sollt ihr erleiden."

难道你没见到那些人? 有人对他们说: “要抑制你们的双手, 要固守拜功, 要交纳天课,” (而他们却倾向战争。) [a]可是当战斗被定为他们的天命时, 有些人却突然开始惧怕人们, 好像他们惧怕安拉一样, 甚至 (他们对人们) 更加惧怕, 于是他们说: “我们的养主啊! 你为什么指令我们战斗? [b]为什么不给我们展缓一会儿?” 你 (对他们) 说: [c]“现世的利益是微不足道的, 将来的生命对于敬畏的人才是最好的。[d]你们将不受丝毫冤枉。”

Italian

Non sai di coloro ai quali venne detto: «Trattenete le vostre mani, e osservate la preghiera e pagate lo Zakat?» E quando venne prescritto a loro di combattere, ecco che una parte di loro fu presa dal timore degli uomini come dovrebbe temere Allah, o con un timore ancora più grande; e dissero: «O nostro Signore, perché Tu ci hai prescritto di combattere? Perché non ci hai concesso ancora un po' di respiro?» Di': «I vantaggi di questo mondo sono poca cosa, mentre migliore sarà l'Aldilà per chi teme Dio, e non vi sarà fatto il minimo torto.»

Spanish

¿No has visto a quienes se les dijo: “Contened vuestras manos, cumplid la Oración y pagad el Zakat”? Mas cuando se les prescribió el combate, ¡mirad! una parte de ellos temen a los hombres como deberían temer a Al-lah e incluso con mayor temor; y dicen: “Señor nuestro, ¿por qué nos has prescrito el combate? ¿Por qué no nos concedes un poco más de tregua?” Diles: “El provecho de este mundo es mínimo y el Más Allá será mejor para quien teme a Dios; y no seréis perjudicados en lo más mínimo”.

کیا تجھے ان لوگوں کا حال معلوم نہیں جنہیں کہا گیا تھا کہ تم اپنے ہاتھوں کو روکے رکھو اور نماز قائم کرو اور زکٰوۃ دو (لیکن وہ جنگ کی طرف مائل تھے) لیکن جب جنگ کرنا ان پر فرض کیا گیا تو یکدم ان میں سے کچھ آدمی لوگوں سے اسی طرح ڈرنے لگے جس طرح خدا سے ڈرنا چاہیئے بلکہ اس سے بھی زیادہ اور کہنے لگے کہ اے ہمارے رب! تو نے ہم پر جنگ کرنا کیوں فرض کیا ہے۔ کیوں نہ تو نے کچھ دیر کے لئے ہمیں (اور) ڈھیل دی۔ تو کہہ دے (کہ) دنیا کا فائدہ حقیر ہے اور جو تقویٰ اختیار کرے اس کے لئے پیچھے آنے والی (زندگی) بہتر ہے اور تم پر کھجور کی گٹھلی کے اندر کی لکیر کے برابر (بھی) ظلم نہ کیا جائے گا۔

تم نے اُن لوگوں کو بھی دیکھا جن سے کہا گیا تھا کہ اپنے ہاتھ روکے رکھو اور نماز قائم کرو اور زکوٰۃ دو؟ اب جو انہیں لڑائی کا حکم دیا گیا تو ان میں سے ایک فریق کا حال یہ ہے کہ لوگوں سے ایسا ڈر رہے ہیں جیسا خدا سے ڈرنا چاہیے یا کچھ اس سے بھی بڑھ کر کہتے ہیں خدایا! یہ ہم پر لڑائی کا حکم کیوں لکھ دیا؟ کیوں نہ ہمیں ابھی کچھ اور مہلت دی؟ ان سے کہو، دنیا کا سرمایہ زندگی تھوڑا ہے، اور آخرت ایک خدا ترس انسان کے لیے زیادہ بہتر ہے، اور تم پر ظلم ایک شمہ برابر بھی نہ کیا جائے گا

English - Sahih

Have you not seen those who were told, "Restrain your hands [from fighting] and establish prayer and give zakah"? But then when fighting was ordained for them, at once a party of them feared men as they fear Allah or with [even] greater fear. They said, "Our Lord, why have You decreed upon us fighting? If only You had postponed [it for] us for a short time." Say, The enjoyment of this world is little, and the Hereafter is better for he who fears Allah. And injustice will not be done to you, [even] as much as a thread [inside a date seed]."

کیا تم نے ان لوگوں کو نہیں دیکھا جنہیں کہا گیا تھا کہ اپنے ہاتھ روکے رکھو اور نماز قائم کرو اور زکواة دو پھر جب انہیں لڑنے کا حکم دیا گیا اس وقت ان میں سے ایک جماعت لوگوں سے ایسا ڈرنے لگی جیسا الله کا ڈر ہو یا اس سے بھی زیادہ ڈر اور کہنے لگے اے رب ہمارے تو نے ہم پر لڑنا یوں فرض کیا کیوں نہ ہمیں تھوڑی مدت اور مہلت دی ان سے کہ دو دنیا کا فائدہ تھوڑا ہے اور آخرت پرہیزگاروں کے لیے بہتر ہے اور ایک تاگے کے برابر بھی تم سے بے انصافی نہیں کی جائے گی

Have not you seen [towards] those who (when) it was said to them, "Restrain your hands and establish the prayer and give the zakah?" Then when was ordained on them the fighting, then a group of them [they] fear the people as (they) fear Allah or more intense fear, and they said, "Our Lord why have You ordained upon us [the] fighting? Why not You postpone (it for) us to a term, near." Say, "Enjoyment (of) the world (is) little and the Hereafter (is) better for whoever fears (Allah) and not you will be wronged (even as much as) a hair on a date-seed."

Hast thou not regarded those to whom it was said, 'Restrain your hands, and perform the prayer, and pay the alms'? Then, as soon as fighting is prescribed for them, there is a party of them fearing the people as they would fear God, or with a greater fear, and they say, 'Our Lord, why hast thou prescribed fighting for us? Why not defer us to a near term?' Say: 'The enjoyment of this world is little; the world to come is better for him who fears God; you shall not be wronged a single date-thread.'

Have you not seen those who were told: 'Restrain you hands, and establish the Prayer, and pay the Zakah'? But when fighting was enjoined upon them some of them feared men as one should fear Allah, or even more, and said: 'Our Lord, why have You ordained fighting for us? Why did You not grant us a little more respite?' Say to them: 'There is little enjoyment in this world. The World to Come is much better for the God-fearing. And you shall not be wronged even to the extent of the husk of a date-stone.

Have you not seen the people who were told: "Hold back your hands (from attacking), observe your devotional obligations and pay the zakat?" But when they were commanded to fight, behold, a section among them were filled with fear of men as though it were the fear of God and even more, and said: "O Lord, why did you make war compulsory for us? Why did you not allow us to live a little more?" Say to them: "How short-lived is the commerce of this world; but that of the next is best for those who fear God; and you will not be wronged the breadth of a thread."

Hast thou not turned Thy vision to those who were told to hold back their hands (from fight) but establish regular prayers and spend in regular charity? When (at length) the order for fighting was issued to them, behold! a section of them feared men as - or even more than - they should have feared Allah: They said: "Our Lord! Why hast Thou ordered us to fight? Wouldst Thou not Grant us respite to our (natural) term, near (enough)?" Say: "Short is the enjoyment of this world: the Hereafter is the best for those who do right: Never will ye be dealt with unjustly in the very least!

Commentary:

This verse refers to a class of men who show eagerness to fight when they are told not to fight, but when the actual time for fighting arrives, they refuse to fight or try to avoid it by various pretexts, thus showing that their former eagerness for fighting was either insincere or was only due to a temporary excitement.

The verse may also be regarded as referring to انصار (Helpers) of Medina who, before the advent of Islam to that city, were constantly at war among themselves. But when they accepted Islam, they were asked to cease fighting. When, however, they were called upon to take up arms to defend Islam, a section of them, who were always fighting among themselves before they embraced Islam, became afraid of fighting in the cause of God.
