وَمَا لَكُمْ لَا تُقَٰتِلُونَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْمُسْتَضْعَفِينَ مِنَ ٱلرِّجَالِ وَٱلنِّسَآءِ وَٱلْوِلْدَٰنِ ٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَآ أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْ هَٰذِهِ ٱلْقَرْيَةِ ٱلظَّالِمِ أَهْلُهَا وَٱجْعَل لَّنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيًّا وَٱجْعَل لَّنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ نَصِيرًا

And what is the matter with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and of the weak — men, women and children — who say, ‘Our Lord, take us out of this town, whose people are oppressors, and make for us some friend from Thyself, and make for us from Thyself some helper?’

And what is the matter with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and of [a]the weak—men, women and children—who say, ‘Our Lord, take us out of this town, whose people are oppressors, and make for us some friend from Thyself, and make for us from Thyselfsome helper.’[545]

4:99.

Commentary:

The verse is a clear proof of the fact that Muslims were not the first to open hostilities. They only fought a war of defence with a view to protecting their religion and saving their weaker co-religionists.

And why should you not fight[632A] in the cause of Allah and for the rescue of [c]the weak[633] men, women and children—who say, ‘Our Lord, take us out of this town whose people are oppressors, and give us a friend from Thyself and give us from Thyself a helper.’

4:99.

The words also mean, what is the matter with you that you fight not.

The verse is a clear proof of the fact that Muslims never started hostilities. They only fought in self-defence in order to protect their religion and save their weaker co-religionists.

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور تمہیں کیا ہوا ہے کہ تم اللہ کی راہ میں اور ایسے مردوں، عورتوں اور بچوں کی خاطر قتال نہیں کرتے جنہیں کمزور بنا دیا گیا تھا (اور) جو دعا کرتے ہیں کہ اے ہمارے ربّ! تو ہمیں اس بستی سے نکال جس کے رہنے والے ظالم ہیں اور ہمارے لئے اپنی جناب سے کوئی سرپرست بنا دے اور ہمارے لئے اپنی جناب سے کوئی مددگار مقرر کر۔

French

Qu’avez-vous donc à ne pas vous battre pour la cause d’Allāh et de ceux qui ont été rendus faibles – hommes, femmes, enfants – qui disent : « Notre Seigneur, fais-nous sortir de cette ville dont les habitants sont des oppresseurs, et envoie-nous de Ta part un ami et envoie-nous de Ta part un aide ? »

German

Und was ist euch, dass ihr nicht kämpfet für Allahs Sache und für die der Schwachen – Männer, Frauen und Kinder –, die sprechen: "Unser Herr, führe uns heraus aus dieser Stadt, deren Bewohner Bedrücker sind, und gib uns von Dir einen Beschützer, und gib uns von Dir einen Helfer"?

有些[c]衰弱的人[337]和妇孺们 (常祈祷着) 说: “我们的养主啊! 求你使我们脱离这个 (充满) 迫害者的城市吧! 求你从你那儿派遣我们的友人, 从你那儿委任我们的援助者吧!” 你们为什么不为主道和这些人参加战斗呢?

4:99.

这节经文清楚地证明穆斯林决不会发动敌对行动。他们只是为保卫自己的宗教和挽救自己力量较弱的教友而战。

E cosa vi è successo che non combattete per la causa di Allah e dei deboli - tra uomini, donne, bambini - che dicono: «Signore nostro, facci uscire da questa città, i cui abitanti sono oppressori, e dacci qualche protettore, da Te stesso, e dacci qualche alleato, da Te stesso.»

Y ¿qué os ocurre que no combatís por la causa de Al-lah y de los débiles -hombres, mujeres y niños- que dicen: “Señor nuestro, sácanos de esta ciudad cuyos habitantes son opresores y consíguenos de Tu parte, un defensor”?

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور تمہیں کیا (ہوگیا) ہے کہ تم اللہ کی (راہ میں) اور ان کمزور مردوں اور عورتوں اور بچوں کی راہ [1]میں جنگ نہیں کرتے جو کہتے ہیں کہ اے ہمارے رب! ہمیں اس بستی سے جس کے رہنے والے ظالم ہیں نکال اور اپنی جناب سے ہمارا کوئی دوست بنا (کربھیج) اور اپنے حضور سے (کسی کو) ہمارا مددگار بنا (کر کھڑا کر) ۔

یعنی ان کو آزاد کرانے کے لئے جو کافروں کے ظلموں کا شکار ہو رہے ہیں۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

آخر کیا وجہ ہے کہ تم اللہ کی راہ میں اُن بے بس مردوں، عورتوں اور بچوں کی خاطر نہ لڑو جو کمزور پاکر دبا لیے گئے ہیں اور فریاد کر رہے ہیں کہ خدایا ہم کو اس بستی سے نکال جس کے باشندے ظالم ہیں اور اپنی طرف سے ہمارا کوئی حامی و مدد گار پیدا کر دے

English - Sahih

And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, "Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?"

اور کیا وجہ ہے کہ تم الله کی راہ میں ان بے بس مردوں اور عورتوں اور بچوں کی خاطر نہ لڑو جو کہتے ہیں اے ہمارے رب ہمیں اس بستی سے نکال جس کے باشندے ظالم ہیں اور ہمارے واسطے اپنے ہاں سے کوئی حمایتی کر دے اور ہمارے واسطےاپنے ہاں سے کوئی مددگار بنا دے
