وَلَقَدْ عَهِدْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ ءَادَمَ مِن قَبْلُ فَنَسِىَ وَلَمْ نَجِدْ لَهُۥ عَزْمًا

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And verily, We had made a covenant with Adam beforehand, but he forgot, and We found in him no determination to disobey.

And verily, We had made a covenant with Adam beforehand, but he forgot, and We found in him no determination to disobey.[2324]

Important Words:

عھدنا (We had made a covenant). عھد means, he promised. عھد الامر means, he knew the affair. عھد فلان وعدہ means, he guarded and fulfilled his promise. عھد الی فلان means, he enjoined upon him or commanded him and made it a condition for him (Lane & Aqrab).

Commentary:

The verse shows that Adam’s lapse was only an error of judgement on his part. It was quite inadvertent and involuntary and not at all intentional or deliberate. To err is human and man, however spiritually exalted he might be, is prone to forgetfulness and consequently is sometimes liable to falter.

And verily, We had made a covenant with Adam beforehand, but he forgot, and We found in him no resolve[1856] to disobey Us.

The verse shows that Adam’s lapse was only an error of judgment. It was inadvertent and involuntary and not at all intentional or deliberate. To err is human.

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور یقیناً ہم نے قبل ازیں آدم سے بھی عہد باندھا تھا پس وہ بھول گیا۔ اور ہم نے (اسے توڑنے کا) اس کا کوئی ارادہ نہیں پایا۔

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور ہم نے اس سے پہلے آدم کو (ایک امر کی) تاکید کی تھی مگر وہ بھول گیا اور ہم نے خوب جانچ لیا کہ اس کے دل میں ہمارا حکم توڑنے کے متعلق کوئی پختہ ارادہ نہیں تھا۔

ہم نے اِس سے پہلے آدمؑ کو ایک حکم دیا تھا، مگر وہ بھول گیا اور ہم نے اُس میں عزم نہ پایا
