وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ قَالُوا۟ بَلْ نَتَّبِعُ مَآ أَلْفَيْنَا عَلَيْهِ ءَابَآءَنَآ ۗ أَوَلَوْ كَانَ ءَابَآؤُهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ شَيْـًٔا وَلَا يَهْتَدُونَ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And when it is said to them, ‘Follow that which Allah has sent down,’ they say: ‘Nay, we will follow that wherein we found our fathers.’ What! even if their fathers had no sense at all and no guidance?

And [a]when it is said to them, ‘Follow that which Allah has sent down,’ they say: ‘Nay, we will follow that wherein we found our fathers.’ What! even if their fathers had no sense at all and no guidance?[177]

Commentary:

It is indeed strange, but nevertheless a hard fact, that in matters of religion which so deeply concern man, he is often content to follow blindly the footsteps of his forefathers and does not even care to satisfy himself that his forefathers were wise and well-guided people. On the other hand, in worldly matters where only the interests of this life are at stake, and that too partially, he often takes meticulous care to see that he adopts the right course and does not blindly follow others.

English - Short Commentary Translation

And [b]when it is said to them, ‘Follow that which Allah has sent down,’ they say, ‘Nay, we will follow that wherein we found our fathers.’[195] What! even if their fathers had no sense at all and followed not the right path?

It is indeed strange, but nevertheless regrettable, that in matters of religion which so deeply concern his eternal life man is often content to follow blindly in the footsteps of his elders. اور جب ان سے کہا جاتا ہے کہ اس کی پیروی کرو جو اللہ نے اتارا ہے تو وہ کہتے ہیں بلکہ ہم تو اس کی پیروی کریں گے جس پر ہم نے اپنے آباءواجداد کو پایا۔ کیا ایسی صورت میں بھی (وہ ان کی پیروی کریں گے) جبکہ ان کے باپ دادا کوئی عقل نہیں رکھتے تھے اور ہدایت یافتہ نہیں تھے۔

French

Et lorsqu’on leur dit : « Suivez tout ce qu’Allāh a révélé, » ils disent : « Nous suivrons plutôt ce que nous avons vu nos pères pratiquer. » Comment ? Même si leurs pères manquaient complètement d’intelligence et n’étaient pas dans la droite voie ?

German

Und wenn ihnen gesagt wird: "Befolget, was Allah herabgesandt hat", sagen sie: "Nein, wir wollen dem folgen, worin wir unsere Väter vorgefunden." Wie! wenn selbst ihre Väter keinen Verstand hatten und nicht auf dem rechten Wege wandelten?

[e]当有人向他们说: “你们要遵守安拉所降下的 (启示)。” 他们 (回答) 说: “不, 我们只遵守我们祖先的遗教。” 难道他们的祖先根本没有见识, 也不听从正道, (他们还要跟从他们?)

E quando si dice loro: «Seguite ciò che Allah ha rivelato», essi dicono: «Noi seguiremo invece quello che abbiamo trovate presso i nostri padri.» Come! Anche se i loro padri non comprendevano nulla e non erano sulla retta via?

Y cuando se les dice: “Seguid lo que Al-lah os ha enviado”, dicen: “No, seguiremos lo que encontramos en nuestros padres”. ¡Cómo! ¿aunque sus padres fueran insensatos y alejados del buen camino?

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور جب ان سے کہا جائے کہ اس (کلام) کی جو اللہ نے اتارا ہے پیروی کرو تو وہ کہتے ہیں کہ (نہیں) ہم تو اسی (طریقہ) کی پیروی کریں گے جس پر ہم نے اپنے باپ دادوں کو پایا۔ بھلا[2] اگر ان کے باپ دادے کچھ بھی عقل نہ رکھتے ہوں اور نہ راہ راست پر چلتے ہوں (تو پھر بھی وہ ایسا ہی کریں گے۔)

قرآنی الفاظ اَوَلَوْ ہیں۔ چونکہ عربی میں سوال کا لفظ بہرحال پہلے آتا ہے اور اردو میں عطف کے بعد۔ اس کا ترجمہ یہ ہوگا ’’اور کیا اگر‘‘ مگر اردو میں ’’اور کیا اگر‘‘ یہ تینوں لفظ جمع نہیں ہوتے بلکہ ایسے موقع پر ’’اورکیا‘‘ کی جگہ ایک لفظ ’’بھلا‘‘ کا بولا جاتا ہے۔ پس وہی لفظ اس جگہ استعمال کیا گیا ہے۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

ان سے جب کہا جاتا ہے کہ اللہ نے جو احکام نازل کیے ہیں اُن کی پیروی کرو تو جواب دیتے ہیں کہ ہم تو اسی طریقے کی پیروی کریں گے جس پر ہم نے اپنے باپ دادا کو پایا ہے اچھا اگر ان کے باپ دادا نے عقل سے کچھ بھی کام نہ لیا ہو اور راہ راست نہ پائی ہو تو کیا پھر بھی یہ انہیں کی پیروی کیے چلے جائیں گے؟

English - Sahih

And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing." Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided?

اور جب انہیں کہا جاتا ہے کہ اس کی پیروی کرو جو الله نے نازل کیا ہے تو کہتے ہیں بلکہ ہم تو اس کی پیروی کریں گے جس پر ہم نے اپنے باپ دادا کو پایا کیا اگرچہ ان کے باپ دادا کچھ بھی نہ سمجھتے ہوں اور نہ سیدھی راہ پائی ہو

And when it is said to them, "Follow what has revealed Allah," they said, "Nay we follow what we found [on it] our forefathers (following)". Even though [were] their forefathers (did) not understand anything and not were they guided?

When it is said to them, "Follow the Commands that Allah has sent down," they reply, "We will follow only what we found our forefathers practising., Well, will they go on following their forefathers even though they did not use common sense and did not find the right way?
